Imtiaz Ali says for him, Jab We Met is ‘not’ a love story: I was not coming from a point of knowing anything about love

Starting from Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met to his latest release Main Vaapas Aaunga, Imtiaz Ali has shown romances across generations and decades through his film. While his latest offering has been garnering love all across for the intensity of its central love story, the filmmaker asserts that he does not claim to have the knowledge of love. “I’m not coming from a point of understanding love into the movies that I’m making,” he says. Imtiaz Ali on Jab We Met Imtiaz Ali reflects on his early works as he shares, “In Socha Na Tha, the confusion of Viren was actually my confusion. Sometimes you commit in a direction and your heart pulls in some other direction. That was something I didn’t find an answer for but I made a movie.” He even has a unique take on the cult classic Jab We Met starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Imtiaz says, “Jab We Met, in my mind, was not even about a love relationship. It is about two people who meet …

From Jab We Met to Main Vaapas Aaunga, Imtiaz Ali finally finds the home he fled | Bollywood News

Watching Imtiaz Ali’s new film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, made me wonder where Geet (Kareena Kapoor) from his 2007 hit romantic comedy Jab We Met would fit into its world. Desperate to flee her palatial Patiala home, Geet manifested — and relentlessly chased — an isolated life in the mountains with her love interest, Anshuman. Like Geet does through the film, Imtiaz has also come of age through his career, as one can witness in his latest directorial. Presumably, like Naseeruddin Shah’s character Keenu in Main Vaapas Aaunga, Geet’s ancestors also hailed from Punjab on the other side of the border. Like countless immigrants during the Partition, they would’ve also had to relinquish their homes and lands, get on a train overflowing with people, and set out for an unfamiliar, yet presumably safe destination in what was now a different country. For refugees who’ve struggled hard to make ends meet and give their descendants a life they never had, it’d be rather puzzling to wrap their head around a young daughter of their family who wants …

Anjana Sukhani compares Meher to Geet, says Imtiaz Ali’s women are mature yet childlike

Anjana Sukhani compares Meher to Geet, says Imtiaz Ali’s women are mature yet childlike

How many actors can really say that I am in an Imtiaz Ali film?” asks Anjana Sukhani, her excitement evident as she speaks to mid-day about Main Vaapas Aaunga. Her journey began with a call inviting her to meet the filmmaker. The role: Naseeruddin Shah’s daughter-in-law and caretaker in the Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari Wagh-starrer.  “He wanted to see me on camera,” recalls Sukhani, who was first asked to send an introduction video. “When I met him at his office, I think he saw Meher in me. He narrated the part to me. And [I had] no questions. Who am I to say no to Imtiaz?” she says. During their discussions, she realised that Meher shares shades of Geet from Jab We Met (2007). “Like Geet, [played by Kareena Kapoor Khan] Meher has no filter. I feel all of Imtiaz’s women are mature but have a childish quality to them. She innocently speaks about the wrong things at the most unfavourable time. It’s an endearing character,” says the actor. Disclaimer: We do not …

Bobby Deol says ‘heartbreak’ of being replaced in Jab We Met made him a ‘better actor’ | Bollywood News

5 min readMumbaiMay 31, 2026 01:16 PM IST Actor Bobby Deol will be seen as a has-been star in Anurag Kashyap’s thriller Bandar, slated to release in cinemas on June 5. The role has parallels to Bobby’s real-life acting career, given he bounced back after years of lows with films like Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 2023 family crime drama Animal, and shows like Prakash Jha’s Amazon MXPlayer crime drama Aashram and Aryan Khan’s Netflix India directorial debut The Ba***ds of Bollywood. In a recent interview, Bobby reflected on how he used the “hate” and “anger” from a challenging period in his life to become a “better actor.” One of the major setbacks in Bobby’s low career phase was when he was replaced by Shahid Kapoor as the male lead in Imtiaz Ali’s 2007 seminal romantic comedy Jab We Met. Even though Bobby had gotten Imtiaz as well as the leading lady, Kareena Kapoor, on board, and was actively pitching the film to production houses, he realized later that one of those banners made the same film …

‘But Mira Rajput likes Tamasha’

3 min readHyderabadMay 22, 2026 01:11 PM IST Nearly two decades after its release, Jab We Met is being watched by a new generation: the children of the two actors who starred in it. Director Imtiaz Ali has reacted with quiet delight, and let slip a detail that changes the story slightly: Shahid Kapoor’s wife Mira is not a Jab We Met fan but prefers Ranbir Kapoor’s Tamasha or Rockstar from the director’s filmography. In a conversation with Pinkvilla, Imtiaz Ali recounted, “It makes me feel nice that Shahid’s kids and Kareena’s kids are watching their film Jab We Met. It’s the only movie I remember after the screening. I went in after the censor screening and asked what certificate they were giving it. They said clean, no arguments or anything.” Shahid Kapoor, in one of his old interviews, revealed that the first film he showed his kids was Jab We Met. Around the same time, Kareena Kapoor said it is the first film she would show her children too. Two lead actors from the …

Sharvari, Vedang Raina would be Jab We Met’s Geet, Aditya if the film was to get a reboot, says Imtiaz Ali | Bollywood News

4 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Feb 28, 2026 04:59 PM IST Jab We Met remains one of the most beloved romantic films of Hindi cinema. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the 2007 film gave us the unforgettable pairing of Aditya and Geet in Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Its dialogues continue to live on in pop culture, its music still resonates across generations, and its emotional honesty remains rare even today. Naturally, the idea of a reboot is both thrilling and risky. Sharvari and Vedang Raina as Geet and Aditya In a recent rapid-fire interaction with NDTV, Imtiaz Ali was asked to imagine what a modern-day version of Jab We Met might look like and who could possibly step into the shoes of its iconic leads. “At this age, I think Sharvari and Vedang could be, because they are very young and they have that streak that they can become that,” he said. Sharvari and Vedang are a part of Imtiaz’s next film. Interestingly in 2024 Expresso event by The Indian Express, Imtiaz was asked where would …
