The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of torrential rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several states on Monday as the southwest monsoon remains active over large parts of the country. According to the latest IMD bulletin, the next 14 hours are expected to be particularly critical, with heavy rain and severe weather likely to affect several regions. IMD warns of heavy rain and strong winds The weather department said wind speeds could reach up to 80 kmph in some areas, increasing the risk of uprooted trees, power outages, traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD has advised farmers, travellers and people living near rivers and coastal regions to remain vigilant. Residents in hilly states have also been warned about the possibility of landslides and sudden rises in river water levels due to persistent rainfall. At least 12 people were killed and several others missing as torrential rains unleashed landslides and flash floods across the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, causing widespread damage to public and private infrastructure including roads and houses, officials said. The devastation prompted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to skip National Conference”s proposed statehood protest in Delhi on Monday and rush to Jammu to take stock of the emerging situation and oversee relief efforts. Abdullah reached the Civil Secretariat here at 6 pm and chaired a high-level meeting. The worst devastation was reported from Surankote tehsil in Poonch district, where most of the fatalities occurred, while rescue teams raced against time to trace the missing persons, the officials said. Deputy Commissioner Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma said at least 16 persons are feared dead in the district with bodies of nine recovered so far. “The rescue efforts are ongoing while all measures are being taken to provide immediate relief to the affected population,” Sharma, who visited various flood-hit areas during …

The figures recorded a surface temperature jump from -9°C on January 1 to around 13°C by January 4 in Daksum in Anantnag district. Similarly, Hirpora in Shopian district saw a rise from -9°C to around 10°C by January 4.
