Neeraj Chopra breaches CWG qualification; finishes fourth

Neeraj Chopra breaches CWG qualification; finishes fourth

India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra opened his 2026 season with a fourth place finish at the Doha Diamond League late on Friday. Neeraj was competing in his first tournament since the 2025 World Athletics Championships in September last year after which he spent several months recovering from a back injury. On Friday, the two-time Olympic medalist registered a best throw of 85.69m in his third attempt to finish fourth while breaching the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 82.61m set by the Athletics Federation of India. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga won the event with a best throw of 88.68m, while former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada finished second with 86.38m and USA’s Curtis Thompson finished third with 85.99m. Neeraj fouled in his first attempt and returned with a throw of 82.77m in his second, a distance that was enough to confirm his place in the Indian squad for Glasgow. He then produced throws of 85.69m and 83.45m to end his campaign with the qualification. Last week, the AFI had named Neeraj in the 32-member …

Neeraj Chopra part ways with coach Jan Železný

Neeraj Chopra part ways with coach Jan Železný

In a major development, two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra and his coach Jan Železný have mutually decided to part ways, bringing an end to their 14-month coaching relationship. Last week, Neeraj had ended his decade-long partnership with his management firm, JSW Sports and launched his own athlete management firm, Vel Sports. Under Železný, Neeraj achieved the elusive 90m-plus throw at the Doha Diamond League in May, registering a 90.23m throw to finish behind Germany’s Julian Weber. The two worked on a new technique that reduced Neeraj’s tendency to lean left at release and helped stabilise his stance. Despite achieving the 90m mark, Neeraj struggled for consistency and failed to make the podium for the first time in seven years when he finished eighth at the World Athletics Championships 2025. Neeraj Chopra after breaking the 90m barrier

Neeraj Chopra after breaking the 90m barrier

Neeraj Chopra finally crossed the long-awaited 90m barrier in the javelin, recording a massive 90.23m throw at the Doha Diamond League 2025. While the mark was a personal and national milestone, Chopra had to settle for second place behind Germany’s Julian Weber, who clinched victory with a last-ditch 91.06m throw. Despite narrowly missing the top podium spot, Chopra was content and confident. “I am very happy with the 90m mark, but it’s a little bit of a bittersweet experience actually,” he said after the event. With this throw, the 27-year-old became just the third Asian and the 25th athlete in the world to breach the 90m mark, a feat made even more satisfying considering the groin issues that have plagued him over recent years are now nearly behind him. Having trained under Czech legend Jan Zelezny since February, Chopra believes that more big throws are on the horizon. “We started working together only in February this year. I am still learning things,” Chopra explained. “He doesn’t normally go to the Diamond Leagues, but he came …

Neeraj Chopra on working with javelin legend Jan Zelezny, changing little things in technique and his groin injury healing

Hoping to breach the elusive 90m mark for the first time in his career, two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has enlisted javelin legend Jan Zelezny as a coach in the off-season after his long-term association with Dr Klaus Bartonietz ended. Zelezny still holds the world record for the farthest heave of the spear and Neeraj Chopra has spoken multiple times in the past about how he considers the Czech Republic javelin legend as his personal idol. Ahead of the Doha Diamond League meet on Friday, Neeraj Chopra was asked at a press conference how it had been working with Zelezny. Before he answered that, he opted to open up on his previous coach Bartonietz, with whom he had claimed the Tokyo Olympics gold and the Paris Olympics silver medals besides winning a gold and a silver at the World Athletics Championships. Neeraj Chopra revealed that Bartonietz, a biomechanical expert, had wanted to spend more time with family, which led to them parting ways. Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra announced that he will be coached by javelin legend Jan Železný, who currently holds the javelin world record. Železný will replace Dr Klaus Bartonietz, who was with Neeraj Chopra since before the coronavirus pandemic. Neeraj’s association with Bartonietz had led to two Olympic and two world championship medals. Neeraj Chopra has long spoken of his admiration for Jan Železný, who was the gold medallist at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games besides having five of the top ten best throws of all time. The Czechia legend broke the javelin throw world record on four occasions en route to claiming the current undisputed mark of 98.48m, in Germany, in 1996. “Growing up, I admired Jan’s technique and precision and spent a lot of time watching videos of him.
