On paper, Jana Nayagan should have been dead on arrival. With no release date in sight and in the midst of a Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) battle, the Vijay-starrer was leaked online in April.  The prosecution told the Madras High Court that the pirated version was viewed by an estimated 1.2 crore people before authorities managed to block access. It had been circulated on WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and multiple torrent sites. By the time the links were taken down, the damage had been done. Before that, the film had spent six months stuck in a censor battle that became one of the most closely followed certification disputes in Tamil cinema history.
