New Delhi, Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood on Saturday said the government has suspended the officials suspected of negligence in connection with the death of a motorcyclist who fell into a pit dug up for construction work by the Delhi Jal Board in west Delhi’s Janakpuri area. A Delhi court on Thursday acquitted former Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Sajjan Kumar in a case related to inciting violence in the Janakpuri area of the national capital during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, news agency PTI reported. Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh orally pronounced a brief order acquitting Kumar. A reasoned order is awaited. In August 2023, the court had framed charges against Kumar for rioting and promoting enmity, while discharging him of charges of murder and criminal conspiracy. In February 2015, a special investigation team (SIT) registered two first information reports (FIRs) against Kumar based on complaints of violence in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas during the riots. The first FIR was related to the violence in Janakpuri, where Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh were killed on November 1, 1984. The second pertained to the killing of Gurcharan Singh, who was set ablaze on November 2, 1984, in Vikaspuri. (Representative photo) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and the Janakpuri’s A-1 Block residents’ welfare association (RWA) to jointly collect and test drinking water samples from 10 houses on November 20, owing to repeated complaints of sewage contamination and conflicting water quality reports. The tribunal issued the order while hearing a plea filed by the RWA, which alleged that sewage was seeping into the area’s drinking water supply. The bench, headed by NGT chairperson justice Prakash Shrivastava, noted inconsistencies in the water test reports submitted by different agencies in recent months, and called for fresh testing after noting that a new water pipeline of 730 metres was expected to be completed by November 20. “The sample analysis reports have been placed on record by the Applicant, the DJB, and the CPCB, and certain contradictions in those reports have been pointed out.
