The 21-year-old woman, who was critically injured during the police action at the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) July 20 protest, has been taken off ventilator support, with doctors at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital on Wednesday (July 22, 2026) saying she is now conscious, breathing on her own and responding appropriately to commands. Sakshi, a Chhattarpur Extension resident, sustained injuries to her face, chest and neck and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She was at the protest on Monday (July 20) with her cousin, who also got injured in her leg. The patient is conscious, responding appropriately to commands, and her MRI scans of the brain and spine are normal, hospital authorities said. She is currently the only patient admitted to RML Hospital in connection with the incident, with all necessary treatment and continuous monitoring being provided, they added. In a representation submitted on Monday (July 20, 2026), the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) said that if the reports were accurate, they raised serious concerns regarding informed consent, personal liberty and constitutional rights. It asserted that hospitals are institutions of healing and should not be perceived as places of detention except where restrictions are expressly authorised by law and carried out in accordance with due process. More than 50 police personnel and over 50 protesters were injured after clashes broke out during the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) ‘Chalo Sansad’ march in New Delhi on Monday, reported the PTI. According to police sources, the confrontation began after some protesters allegedly threw stones at security personnel. Police responded with a baton charge to disperse the crowd. Both injured protesters and police personnel were taken to hospitals for treatment. Delhi Police detained more than 100 protesters from several locations across the New Delhi district, including Parliament Street, Patel Chowk, Constitution Club, Shastri Bhawan and nearby areas, the news agency reported. The detainees were taken to various police stations and temporary detention centres. Police sources said those detained would be released after verification and completion of legal formalities. The protest, led by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. amid heightened police presence, with supporters arriving from different parts of Delhi and neighbouring States.
