Why Japanese fans tidy up stadiums

Why Japanese fans tidy up stadiums

4 min readJun 15, 2026 09:13 PM IST Shortly after Japan’s 2-2 draw against the Netherlands, a familiar sight unfolded at AT&T Stadium in Texas: Japanese fans cleaning up trash, putting it into blue bags they had carried in. The football world first witnessed the Samurai Blue supporters leaving stadiums spotless at France 1998, Japan’s maiden World Cup appearance. For those in Japan, it was no surprise. Cleanliness is not a habit. It is infrastructure. “In the Japanese system, cleaning begins at elementary school when the kids are six to seven years old. They will clean the classroom and the lobbies with brooms and wipes. They will serve food. Cleaning is linked to discipline and responsibility. Japan have faced an almost last minute change of plans after captain Endo Wataru couldn’t recover from the squad due to an aggravated left foot injury on Thursday (11 June) and left the Nashville, Tennessee camp speaking only to Itakura, so as to not disturb preparations. Many tears were shed when they found out given the Liverpool midfielder is much loved. But Endo announced his international retirement, handing reins to Itakura. Itakura was Ajax’s first Japanese signing ever, though many Japanese and Koreans play for Dutch clubs. The other Amsterdam-based Ajax Japanese is Takehiro Tomiyasu. For the Dutch, it’s Wout Weghorst- with enduring fame of his goal against Argentina in 2022. But when the club teammates meet at a World Cup on opposite sides, it’s always intriguing. “Of course, we’ve talked about it. Mainly in a normal and relaxed way, not really in a joking way,” …

He was subsequently docked 9 points and plummeted from 5th to 10th. “You forget all the other stuff that happened in …
