Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange on Thursday warned that the Maharashtra government would be responsible if he suffers health complications during his planned indefinite hunger strike, which he said would begin under the open sky amid extreme summer heat from May 30, reported PTI. The doctor, hailing from Beed district, was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan on October 23. In a note scribed on her palm, she alleged that sub inspector Gopal Badane raped her on multiple occasions, while Prashant Bankar, a software engineer, mentally harassed her. Both have been arrested. Mr. Jarange met her family in Kavadgaon in Wadwani tehsil and assured them of his support in their fight for justice. He spoke to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam over phone and also got them to interact with the doctor’s kin. Activist Manoj Jarange on Sunday said he will march to Mumbai on August 29 to renew the agitation for reservation for the Maratha community, reported the PTI. Manoj Jarange, who has undertaken multiple hunger strikes to press the demand of reservation for the politically dominant community in government jobs and education, was speaking at Mahakala village in Ambad tehsil of the district. Jarange urged community members to prepare for a long protest in Mumbai lasting 12 to 13 days. The activist has been demanding reservations for Marathas under the OBC quota by recognising them as Kunbis. The Kunbis, an agrarian community, enjoy OBC reservation benefits. “My health is deteriorating, but I will not die until we get the reservation,” an emotional Jarange said, adding, “We will march to Mumbai and we are not coming back empty-handed,” according to the PTI. Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday demanded an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe against Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde in view of the allegations of scam in the agriculture department that he handled in the previous government, reported the PTI. Activist Anjali Damania earlier in the day alleged that there was a scam of Rs 88 crore in the agriculture department when Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dhananjay Munde held the portfolio in the previous Mahayuti coalition government in the state. Despite the Union government`s 2016 directive to transfer money directly to farmers` bank accounts under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), the agriculture department purchased equipment and fertilisers for distribution to farmers at inflated rates, she claimed. Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Monday claimed Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde met him before the state polls last year along with his associate Walmik Karad, arrested later in an extortion case linked to the murder of a sarpanch, reported news agency PTI. Munde has been facing the heat since the arrest of Karad in the extortion case related to the brutal murder of Massajog village sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh in Beed district in December 2024. The Minister for Food and Civil Supplies is the NCP MLA from the same district. The opposition has been demanding Dhananjay Munde`s ouster for an impartial probe into the sarpanch`s murder. Deshmukh was abducted, tortured and murdered on December 9, 2024, for allegedly trying to stop an extortion bid targeting an energy firm in Beed district. Jarange said he would approach a different strategy in the ongoing battle for Maratha reservation under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. He along with 104 activists, including women, had launched the hunger strike on January 25, to demand reservations for the Maratha community. While the demand for quota remains at the forefront of his movement, Jarange has also raised his voice for justice in the brutal murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district. Deshmukh was abducted, tortured, and killed on December 9, 2024. OBC activist Laxman Hake on Wednesday (January 8, 2024) lambasted Maratha quota campaigner Manoj Jarange-Patil and BJP MLA Suresh Dhas for allegedly downplaying the seriousness of the murder of Santosh Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district of Maharashtra. Deshmukh was allegedly abducted and tortured to death on December 9, 2024, for opposing extortion attempts against an energy firm linked to a windmill project. Seven suspects have been arrested so far. The incident has acquired a caste-related undertone as Deshmukh hailed from the Maratha community, while most of the accused belong to the Vanjari community, a dominant OBC group in Beed. The case has intensified political tensions with leaders from both ruling and Opposition parties, including Mr. Dhas, calling for the resignation of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and State Minister Dhananjay Munde, a Vanjari leader.
