The FIR was filed based on the complaint received from JNU’s Chief Security Officer in Vasant Kunj North Police Station under Section 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of public peace) and Section 353 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In a series of posts on X, the University said that an FIR has been lodged in the matter and disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against students identified in connection with the incident. “The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration has vowed the strictest action against students found raising objectionable slogans against Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Home Minister. New Delhi, Amid demands for reserving seats in the newly inaugurated Barak Hostel, Jawaharlal Nehru University has clarified that no hostel is reserved based on region or culture but priority is being given to students from the northeast in line with official directives. JNU says no hostel reserved based on region, assures priority to northeast students in Barak Hostel The university said the hostel allotment process began on April 8 in a phased manner and “priority have been given to the northeast students in Barak Hostel.” It, however, emphasized the existing policy would continue to be followed for all accommodations, including Barak Hostel. “This is brought to the kind notice and information to all the concerned stakeholders… The Barak hostel was opened officially for allotment of JNU students on April 7,” the university said in a circular, referring to the Inter-University agreement and the government-funded Barak Hostel project. “Presently, all northeastern students are residing at all JNU hostels. President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday appointed Mazhar Asif as the vice chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia, according to Union Ministry of Education officials. Asif is currently a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University‘s (JNU) School of Languages. “The president, in her capacity as the visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia, has appointed Professor Mazhar Asif, School of Languages, JNU, as the vice chancellor of Jamia for five years from the date on which he enters upon his office or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier,” a ministry official said. Asif, a JNU alumnus, was a member of the drafting committee for the new National Education Policy, 2020. The Jamia vice chancellor post fell vacant in November 2023 when previous VC Najma Akhtar’s tenure came to an end. Open to teach about thinkers from different states if govts provide funding, says JNU V-C

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is open to teach historical lessons as well as develop and gather research material related to thinkers from different states, if the state governments are willing to provide funding for the same, Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit said on Friday. Pandit’s comments come after The Indian Express reported on Friday that JNU is planning to start a ‘Centre of Excellence’ named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which will draw lessons from his era to understand the “concept of Akhand Bharat” and his “struggle for Hindavi Swaraj”. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Centre for Security & Strategic Studies in the School of International Studies, which will be supported by the Maharashtra government, will focus on teaching Indian strategic thought, Maratha military history, Shivaji’s naval strategy and guerilla warfare among other subjects.
