Sonny Rollins, saxophonist and restless genius of jazz, dead at 95 | Music News

Sonny Rollins, the tenor saxophonist and restless genius whose bold, distinctive tone and constant experimentation kept him on the cutting edge of jazz for more than 50 years, died Monday at age 95. Spokesperson Terri Hinte told The Associated Press that Rollins died at his home in Woodstock, New York. She cited no specific cause of death, but said he had been largely housebound over the past couple of years because of various physical problems. From his early days as a teen phenom to his more measured solo work and experimentation with free jazz, Sonny Rollins was revered for his improvisational skill. He was one of the last living greats of the bebop era and — along with John Coltrane and Charlie Parker — one of the most influential saxophonists of his time. Rock fans got a dose of his music with the Rolling Stones’ 1981 album Tattoo You, which features’ Rollins’ wistful sax solo on the ballad “Waiting on a Friend,” devised after watching Mick Jagger dance. Despite his enduring success, Sonny Rollins was …

Beyond Kenny G and ‘elevator music’: The spirit of New Orleans comes to Delhi in a groovy jazz soiree

“What about Kenny G? I mean, what about elevator music? You know, jazz music that I know?” said Mia Dolan, explaining her aversion to jazz to Sebastian Wilder in La La Land. For many of us, that familiar idea of jazz is shaped by exactly this stereotype – the smooth, brassy swell of a saxophone drifting softly in the background of a restaurant, or echoing faintly inside an elevator. To truly grasp its depth and context, it’s something you have to experience live, where the music unfolds in real time. This very idea shaped the vision of Arjun Sagar Gupta, founder of Delhi’s jazz …

International Jazz Day | Joe Bandwalla: I would very much like to see jazz bands in Mumbai

He’s known to have worked on iconic films including Khalnayak (Laxmikant-Pyarelal), Dev D (Amit Trivedi) and on several projects with the late Bappi Lahiri. On International Jazz Day, Joe opened up about how the jazz music scene has changed throughout the years. He says. “We are losing all the old musicians in our industry, only a few can play all the seven jazz instruments. The electronic instruments are getting over the industry. It was we who played all the bagpipes, trumpets, trombones, violins and the symphonies for years in films.” He adds, “I would very much like to see jazz bands in Mumbai.” International Jazz Day | Joe Bandwalla: I would like to see jazz bands in Mumbai At the age of 76, Mr. Vessoaker says, “I have seen the real beauty of music in my life. Jazz City review: A period drama that never finds its rhythm | Web-series News

4 min readUpdated: Mar 20, 2026 04:15 PM IST Jazz City review: The idea of a series set in early 70s Calcutta, revolving around a buzzy nightclub that everyone in the city flocks to, which is the epicentre of intrigue and spry spy-games, is something I thought I could easily get behind: Cal, in the decade when flower-children were doing their thing– there’s a framed photo of Dylan and Baez on which the camera rests for a fleeting second– night spots where the cool cats let down their hair, and the background of revolution: could it get any better? Apart from a sultry crooner who is the main draw apart from the unlimited booze, there are Pakistani soldiers, khadi-kurta-and-jhola clad Bengali freedom fighters, swaggering men-about-town, and a whole bunch of others in Jazz City, a ten-part show which should have been, by all rights, a cracker. Sadly, this Soumik Sen directed show belies its promise even as it unspools its first episode: the flat, amateurish staging, with most characters speaking their lines as pieces to …

Jazz City review: Historical drama about the birth of Bangladesh is painfully indulgent and out of tune

Jazz City series review Cast: Arifin Shuvoo, Sauraseni Maitra, Shantanu Ghatak, Aniruddha Gupta, Sayandeep Sen, Shreya Bhattacharya, Shataf Figar Creator: Soumik Sen Where to watch: SonyLiv Star rating: ★★ Sometimes ambition is not enough. Even good intent is not enough to salvage a story that does not know its own pulse. Such is the case with the new SonyLiv series Jazz City. From the large, expansive frames to the many little paths this story takes to navigate a turbulent time of national importance, I see how much has gone into making the show. But that does not help its case, or for creator Soumik Sen, as the show remains inert despite its full-blown capacity, incurious despite all the concoction of different factors, and mostly, out of depth even with so much space to fill. Jazz City holds promise, but it seems like that is everything it can hold after all. Arifin Shuvoo plays Jimmy Roy in Jazz City. The premise Spread across 10 hour-long episodes, Jazz City starts off with little force. I was waiting …
