Election Amid Congress’s Maharashtra Misery, Jharkhand Slide, Wayanad Is Saving Grace

Election Amid Congress’s Maharashtra Misery, Jharkhand Slide, Wayanad Is Saving Grace

New Delhi: Kerala’s Wayanad was the only bright spot for the Congress today as the Grand Old Party posted one of its worst performances in Maharashtra. In the Lok Sabha by-polls in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra not only filled her brother Rahul Gandhi’s shoes, she did it in spades, surpassing his 2024 record vote margin by noon.  Where Rahul Gandhi had a margin of 3.65 lakh votes in the Lok Sabha election held earlier this year, Ms Gandhi Vadra secured over 6.12 lakh votes, beating her nearest rival, CPM’s Sathyan Mokeri by over 4.1 lakh votes. But her overall votes were lower than that of Mr Gandhi  due to the low turnout.  The turnout in the seat, which has over 14 lakh registered voters, was around 65 per cent – down from the close to 74 per cent in the Lok Sabha polls held in April and much lower than the 80 per cent-plus turnout of 2019, when Mr Gandhi had made it the second seat he was contesting from.  After winning from Rae Bareilly …

Jharkhand Assrmbly election: Amid ‘infiltrator’ rhetoric, campaigns take different shapes in villages across Santhal Pargana

From doorstep delivery of construction materials for places of worship in Adivasi villages to pamphlets highlighting key promises such as cash for women, jobs for youth, and housing for all, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign in Santhal Pargana is playing out on the ground in different ways across the region’s northern-most constituencies, including Maheshpur, Rajmahal, Berhait, Pakur, and Borrio. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s (JMM) rhetoric of calling BJP’s star campaigners “outsiders”, in whose States tribal people are subjected to atrocities, too, is reaching several Adivasi-dominated villages through videos on social media. While several Adivasi communities spoke of infrastructure needs – for self and community — conversations in others featured concerns of Adivasi women marrying outside the community, consent, and changing demographics.  The Santhal Pargana division, which goes to polls on November 20, comprises six districts containing 18 Assembly constituencies. In the 2019 Assembly election, nine of these seats were won by the JMM, and four each by the BJP and Congress. In 2014, even when the BJP had formed the government, the JMM had won seven seats …

In Jharkhand’s Barhet, A High-Stakes Assembly Election Battle Between Tradition And Change

Jharkhand: Gamaliyal Hembram, a local leader, is leveraging his grassroots connection Ranchi: Barhet, Jharkhand’s most high-profile assembly seat, stands at the crossroads of tradition and transformation. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, a two-time winner here, faces an invigorated challenge from BJP’s young candidate Gamaliyal Hembram. This contest is more than a political skirmish – it’s a reflection of tribal identity, legacy, and aspirations. Historical Battleground Nestled in the historical Santhal Pargana region, Barhet holds deep cultural and political significance. Known as Damin-e-Koh, or “lap of the mountain,” this land has been home to the Santhals since 1832 when the British designated it as their settlement area for farming. It was here, in 1855, that the Santhal Rebellion, or “Hool,” erupted against British exploitation, led by Sidho, Kanhu, Chand, and Bhairav. Today, Barhet remains a Scheduled Tribes (reserved) seat, with Santhals and Pahadias making up 71 per cent of the electorate and Muslims comprising another 10 per cent. The bow-and-arrow symbol of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) holds a sacred place in the hearts of the tribal population, …

The release of the BJP manifesto and Union minister Amit Shah’s comments on “infiltration” have drawn a sharp response from Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Mr Soren has pointed out that infiltration from Bangladesh takes place through BJP-ruled states and questioned on what basis the Centre has given asylum to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.  “I would like to know whether the BJP has some sort of internal understanding with Bangladesh,” he said today while addressing an election rally at Ranka in Garhwa Assembly seat. “Please tell us on what basis you allowed the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh to land in India and seek asylum. Infiltrators from Bangladesh enter India through BJP-ruled states. They are saying it themselves,” he added. Yesterday, while releasing the BJP manifesto, Amit Shah had accused the state of giving “shelter” to infiltrators. “You have given shelter to infiltrators. You made infiltrators your votebank.
