The enumeration phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Jharkhand concluded on Wednesday, with 4.37 million forms remaining uncollected, including 763,000 belonging to dead voters, officials said on Thursday. Misir Besra, the last remaining Central Committee (CC) and Politburo member of the CPI (Maoist), was arrested in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district on Tuesday, officials from the CRPF and Jharkhand Police said. Carrying a reward of more than ₹1 crore on information leading to his arrest, Besra was caught in the Tundi-Mandiya forest area near the Dhanbad-Giridih border while allegedly trying to flee a security operation, they said. This has prompted members of the Santhal community to demand a re-examination. Candidates and representatives of the Santhal community claimed that several questions resembled those asked in examinations such as the UPSC Civil Services Examination and the UGC-NET, making the paper disproportionately difficult for Santhal Adivasi candidates who had prepared according to the syllabus notified by JSSC. They alleged that the examination was conducted on the basis of the Class 10 syllabus. Two school students were killed and seven others suffered burn injuries after a Jagannath Rath Yatra chariot came into contact with a high-tension electricity wire in Jharkhand’s Khunti district on Monday, reported the IANS. The incident occurred in the Torpa area during the annual Lord Jagannath chariot procession, officials said. The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Chandan Kumar and 17-year-old Tijeshwar Gop, both students of Shrihari Plus Two School in Torpa, the news agency reported. Some of the injured are reported to be in serious condition and are receiving treatment at different hospitals. A 21-year-old construction worker from Jharkhand was killed after a section of the concrete lining inside the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel collapsed in Uttarkashi district during the early hours of Thursday, officials said. No other workers were trapped in the collapse and the tunnel remained accessible. The two projects covering four districts across the States of Odisha and Jharkhand will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 145 kms.
