Sajan Prakash finds new purpose under former rival Sandeep Sejwal

Sajan Prakash finds new purpose under former rival Sandeep Sejwal

For years, two athletes from modest backgrounds in Delhi and Kerala set out to chase the same dream in different corners of Bengaluru. They left home young, battled financial struggles, endured exhausting training sessions and slowly carved out identities in a sport that rarely promised security. One became one of India’s finest breaststrokers and won an elusive Asian Games bronze medal in 2014. The other became the poster boy of Indian swimming and went on to represent the country at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But years after competing for the same Olympic spot, Sandeep Sejwal and Sajan Prakash are now on the same side of the lane. Supporting each other, not as rivals but as partners chasing one final dream. Sajan, who became the lone Indian swimmer to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games early this year, had returned to the pool last year after almost 7 months of break. “After the 2024 Olympics, it was a big downhill for me. I quit for almost 6 to 7 months and then went …

SG Pipers stayed top of the standings as they defeated JSW Soorma Hockey Club 3-1 in their Women’s Hero Hockey India League encounter at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi on Saturday. Even though Soorma managed to end their long wait for a goal in the tournament and took the lead on the night, the defeat all but ends their hope of finishing in the top two. For the Pipers, Lola Riera (13’), Jyoti Singh (18’), and Sunelita Toppo (58’) scored a goal each, while Penny Squibb (12’) netted the only goal for the Soorma. The opening quarter saw an intense end-to-end battle, with the teams trading early attacks and testing each other in a high-tempo start. Soorma struck first when Squibb – who missed a Penalty Stroke on Friday in the defeat against Ranchi Royals – converted a penalty corner to give her side the lead. Shrachi Bengal Tigers began their Women’s Hero Hockey India League 2025–26 campaign with a narrow but hard-earned 1-0 victory over JSW Soorma Hockey Club at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Stadium in Ranchi on Monday. The match was decided by an 11th-minute penalty corner conversion from Agustina Gorzelany, whose powerful drag flick found the bottom corner to give the Tigers an early advantage. Despite sustained attacking pressure from Soorma Hockey Club over the remaining three quarters, the Tigers’ disciplined defence ensured the opening goal was enough to secure all three points. The contest opened with an intense midfield battle, with both sides cautious in possession. Soorma gradually grew into the game and began making regular entries into the Tigers’ circle, though they struggled to create clear shooting opportunities. Against the run of play, the Tigers earned a penalty corner late in the first quarter, and Gorzelany made no mistake. Soorma responded immediately by winning a set-piece of their own, but Shihori Oikawa’s effort was deflected wide. Soorma dominated territory in the second …
