Long jumper Ancy unlocks key to consistency after battle with hormonal issues

3 min readMay 23, 2026 05:19 PM IST Asian Games silver medallist Ancy Sojan needed to better the long jump national record of 6.83 metres to qualify for the Commonwealth Games 2026 at Federation Cup. While she couldn’t breach the qualification mark for CWG, she did produce the third best jump ever by an Indian with a new personal best of 6.75m. Her mark is the third best by an Indian after Anju Bobby George’s 6.83m and Shaili Singh’s 6.76m. Ancy, 25, who didn’t have a great year in 2025 due to hormonal issues and her struggle with losing weight, recorded five jumps over the 6.50m mark. “It was good and the graph of my jumps was going upwards. The first target for me was to complete the event without a foul jump and I did that,” Ancy told reporters after her event. The consistency was remarkable because she crossed the 6.50m mark just once last year. James Hillier, head coach of Reliance Athletics program, was particularly impressed with her consistency. “I know she missed …

How triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker learned to master the big stage

Athletics, on a global stage, is a lot about an athlete’s style on the starting block, body language, and the personality an they project as much as it is about performing and delivering an entertainment package to the audience. But for someone with a quiet demeanor, the energy or the environment can be intimidating. More so when sharing space with some of the sport’s biggest stars in the call room much before the competition even begins. For triple jumper Abdulla Aboobacker, his initial global tournaments were about getting acclimatised to the very intensity. “Earlier, when I saw top international athletes, I would almost forget why I had come there,” he told The Bridge. “But the exposure has helped me gain experience and over the last three years, I have learned how to handle myself in those situations.” “In India, we warm up and go directly to the competition area. But internationally, you have to spend time inside the call room first. Athletes are warming up, there are bag checks and other procedures, before you step …

For the mother he lost, long jumper Lokesh Sathyanathan leaps to NCAA title in USA | Sport-others News

Five years ago, the inspiring words of his mother, who was in the ICU of a Bengaluru hospital after testing positive for Covid, made long-jumper Lokesh Sathyanathan double down on his American collegiate dream. Two days ago, Lokesh looked heavenwards while standing atop the podium after winning the top-tier indoor title of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) in the US, and dedicated the trophy to mother Felcy Mary who succumbed to Covid on that hospital bed. The first person he called after winning the gold was his father L Sathyanathan, a retired taxi driver. “I just saw some happy tears on his face during the video call,” Lokesh told The Indian Express. Lokesh’s fourth-round jump on Friday of 8.21 metres bettered his previous indoor national record of 8.01. He also moved to third on the India all-time list. In a tight contest at the Randal Tyson Track Centre in Fayetteville, Arkansas, just one centimetre separated Tarleton State University’s Lokesh from silver medalist De’Aundre Ward (8.20m) of the University of Southern Mississippi. With a 32-year-old woman coach in his corner, young Indian long jumper pushes limits, tests seasoned pros

It is easy to mistake Keerti Tiwari for an athlete. She’s in good shape, is lithe, and might as well have been one of the fellow jumpers egging on the participants in the men’s long jump. However, it turns out she’s a Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach with a Master’s degree in sports psychology from LNIPE in Gwalior, a deemed sports university. She’s on her feet every other minute during competition, reviewing each jump and quickly giving feedback to athletes. At the Maharaja’s College Ground during the men’s long jump final, Keerti is focussed on David P, a 23-year-old. On paper, David is not the favourite in a field that includes national record holder Jeswin Aldrin. Because of recent hamstring strains, David and Aldrin are not at their best. Aldrin took the lead in the second round with 7.83 metres, but David came roaring back with 7.94m in the fourth to clinch the gold medal. Though none of the jumpers in the final qualified for the Asian Championships or crossed the 8-metre mark, an …
