Death, taxes and Netherlands women’s hockey team winning a title: Dutch clinch third straight FIH Junior World Cup crown | Hockey News

The Netherlands sealed their third consecutive world title at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup, triumphing in Santiago, Chile after defeating Argentina in the final, to reaffirm their historical dominance in the category. The Dutch side reached a record sixth world title and completed a third consecutive crown following their triumphs in 2022, 2023 and now 2025. The Netherlands settled the match in the first half with a goal from a penalty corner and another from open play, then protected their narrow lead in the decisive stages through a very compact defensive structure that withstood sustained Argentine pressure on the turf of the Estadio Nacional. The conclusion of the tournament also saw Belgium secure the bronze medal, following a convincing 5-1 victory over China in the third-place play-off. Earlier in the tournament, India had finished 10th, after losing the final classification match against Spain. It was India’s second-worst finish in the tournament’s history. Netherlands vs Argentina (Full-Time Score: 2-1) The final opened with sustained attacking pressure from the Netherlands, who asserted control from the …

Individuals over team: How India’s Junior hockey World Cup hopes ended tamely and brutally exposed frailties | Hockey News

In his post-match analysis after the 5-1 win against India at the FIH Junior World Cup in Chennai on Sunday, German coach Mirko Stenzel was full of praise for his side’s defence throughout the night and the intensity in the first quarter, more than the attacking unit that pumped in the five goals. But one line of his post-match analysis stood out: “To beat the individual-skilled players from India the way we did is incredibly hard.” It was evidently meant as a compliment to India’s style of hockey, but it also gave a glimpse into why Germany were able to thwart the hosts’ attacking forays on the night effectively. Just by blocking of passing lines and staying within their structures, Germany barely allowed India to have any attacking joy. When the scoreline reads 1-5 in favour of the opposition, it’s easy to think that the defence had a nightmare outing – and to an extent, that was true as PR Sreejesh said later that the silly mistakes proved costly. But India’s problems were compounded by …

FIH Junior World Cup: Argentina head coach fumes as contentious goal takes Spain into final | Hockey News

A tight semifinal between Spain and Argentina came down to a couple of controversial moments at the FIH Junior World Cup. A contentious Spanish goal in the 56th minute, eventually credited to Albert Serrahima, proved to be the difference as Argentina were beaten 1-2, leaving their head coach Juan Gilardi fuming. The 2016 Rio Olympics gold medallist, now mentoring the junior squad, alleged that referees ‘f****d’ his team during the tournament with cards, and the winning goal was “clearly not a goal”. “Right now, I have to say that the umpires, they f****d us the whole tournament with cards. They think that we are the only team that is playing aggressively and we get a card for everything,” Gilardi told reporters, emotions still raw. “That (winning) goal was clearly not a goal. And on the other side, they say that it was a danger for the attacking team (when a penalty corner was denied to Argentina with two seconds left). The whole tournament, umpiring is really bad against Argentina but we have to deal with …

Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup: Sakshi Rana’s solo strike the highlight in India’s 4-0 win against Ireland, but quarterfinal chances bleak | Hockey News

Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup: Sakshi Rana’s solo strike the highlight in India’s 4-0 win against Ireland, but quarterfinal chances bleak | Hockey News

Scorers: Purnima Yadav (42′,58′), Kanika Siwach (12’) and Sakshi Rana (57′) In India’s 4-0 win against Ireland at in their final Pool C match of the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup, the highlight was Sakshi Rana – who has already made her senior debut on the back of a impressive Hockey India League season – as she lifted the ball from the turf down the left channel, dribbled into the circle, cut in and unleashed a fine low strike. But the reaction after the goal was telling – there was barely a hint of celebration, despite the scoreline reading 3-0. Because, India know their chances of progressing to the quarterfinals are bleak despite winning two of the three matches in their group. India will have to wait for the rest of the day – or even longer – as the group-stage matches wind down, to see if they can sneak in as one of the two best second-placed teams but it appears unlikely. They did, however, complete their part of the equation at the Centro …

FIH Junior Hockey World Cup: How an article on a Dutch website ‘angered’ Argentina on their way to a tight quarterfinal win against Netherlands | Hockey News

FIH Junior Hockey World Cup: How an article on a Dutch website ‘angered’ Argentina on their way to a tight quarterfinal win against Netherlands | Hockey News

It was a thrilling win for Argentina against one of the game’s powerhouses, the Netherlands, in the quarterfinals at the FIH Junior World Cup in Chennai on Friday. Just one goal – Captain Tomas Ruiz’s 52nd-minute effort from a Penalty Corner – was enough for Argentina to eliminate one of the pre-tournament favourites. Argentina’s celebrations initially seemed like one of sheer joy at pulling off an impressive defensive effort but their head coach Juan Gilardi later revealed there was more to it than met the eye. That his wards were triggered by an article on a Dutch website, which they found ‘discriminatory’. “It’s a shame because the official site of the Dutch team was talking about some discrimination, some things about the Argentinian players. That was a kind of fuel for us to win this match also,” Gilardi said in the mixed zone after Argentina reached the semifinals. When asked to elaborate, Gilardi said: “You have to check hockey.nl website, you have to see what is written there. It’s not nice. You will understand, It …

FIH Men’s Junior World Cup: After sailing through group phase, India face tough test against Belgium in knockout quarterfinal | Hockey News

FIH Men’s Junior World Cup: After sailing through group phase, India face tough test against Belgium in knockout quarterfinal | Hockey News

It’s fairly common to see a hockey team take off its goalkeeper when chasing a match, fielding 11 outfield players and going on an all-out attack. But what happened in Madurai on Tuesday at the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup was rather extraordinary. In their last Pool D match against Egypt, when leading 1-0 after the first quarter, Belgium decided to take their goalkeeper Alexis van Havere off. Egypt nearly scored immediately with an aerial into the circle before being thwarted by a desperate goal-line clearance by a defender. Still, Belgium’s situation was such that they simply had to take that risk and not worry about the downsides. The only way Belgium could reach the quarterfinals was to beat Egypt by a massive margin to sneak in as the second-best second-placed team across the six pools. The Young Red Lions, who had lost 0-2 against Spain to find themselves in a precarious situation, beat Egypt 10-0, which meant the other contenders had too much to do to make up the goal difference. That’s the sort …

Meet India captain Rohit, a powerful drag-flicker from Hisar who idolises Harmanpreet Singh

In a Hockey India video introducing Rohit as the captain for the ongoing Junior World Cup in Tamil Nadu, Harmanpreet Singh speaks with fondness about the 21-year-old’s passion to learn, and also highlights one quality he admired: “He is an excellent defender too, as he plays the role of first rusher in Penalty Corner defence. When we play matches against the junior team, I also find it challenging to beat him,” the senior captain says. Ironically enough, it was one of those instances of being the first rusher in a match against the senior team that Rohit suffered an injury in camp end of last year, which left him with some serious questions. “The ball struck my face. I suffered a fracture, and I had to have a plate in my jaw,” Rohit tells The Indian Express, when asked what’s been the toughest moment of his young career so far. “For a month-and-a-half, I fell back on my fitness. I couldn’t eat or drink properly. At that point, I felt like giving up. What is …

FIH Men’s Junior World Cup: Rohit named captain, no Araijeet Singh Hudal as India name squad for home tournament | Hockey News

India’s junior men’s hockey team will miss the services of striker and drag flicker Araijeet Singh Hundal at the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup as Hockey India named the 18-member squad for the tournament starting later this month in Tamil Nadu. Araijeet has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury while defender-cum-dragflicker Rohit has been named the captain. The tall forward, who already has 21 senior caps and scored five goals, has been a prolific part of the junior part with 33 goals in 40 official Under-21 appearances. “Unfortunately, India will miss the experience and charisma of Araijeet Singh Hundal who is nursing a shoulder injury and will miss the Junior World Cup,” Hockey India said in a release. The tournament is set to begin from 28th November to 10 December 2025 and will take place across two venues in Chennai and Madurai. The Indian team coached by legendary former India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh are grouped in in Pool B along with Chile, Switzerland and Oman who have come in as replacement for Pakistan. …
