‘CWG is probably going to be a bit tight for Jyothi Yarraji’

Mumbai: Making it to this year’s Commonwealth Games is likely to be “a little bit tight” for Jyothi Yarraji, India’s top hurdler recovering from surgery after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, according to her coach James Hillier. The women’s 100m hurdles national record holder and Paris Olympian suffered an ACL tear on her right knee during training mid last year, and underwent surgery in July. The 26-year-old returned to track training last month at her base in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai. Speaking in Ulwe, Hillier, her coach and Athletics Director at Reliance Foundation, said they are eyeing the Federation Cup in May for a possible competitive return and singled out the Asian Games, where Yarraji was a silver in the last edition, as the priority for this season. The trimmed CWG in Glasgow are from July 23 to August 2, with the Asian Games in Japan’s Aichi-Nagoya scheduled from September 19 to October 4. “The Commonwealth Games is probably going to be a little bit tight,” said Hillier. “We’re looking at possibly the Fed Cup …

Armed with a revised stride-technique, Jyothi Yarraji strives for new personal best

New Delhi: At the 2025 Federation Cup in Kochi last month, Jyothi Yarraji spoke passionately about overcoming a freak injury before clocking 13.23s to win the women’s 100m hurdles. The weeks leading up to that competition were days filled with anxiety for Yarraji. “I think that is a difficult position for us because we work for this competition for 6 months,” she said in a conversation with The Bridge on Thursday. Turning up at the Federation Cup was important for Yarraji, with the meet having been declared the official qualification event for the upcoming 26th Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. With that hurdle having been cleared, the sprinter is now looking ahead in her quest to defend her 100m hurdles gold in South Korea. And aiding her cause is a new weapon of sorts – a revised stride technique. Yarraji explained that she previously ran with an eight-stride pattern and somewhere along the way had changed to a seven-pattern stride. “Seven-pattern is like the power (flex), and eight-pattern is the frequency adjustor that …

Jyothi Yarraji, after winning 2025 Federation Cup

Jyothi Yarraji, after winning 2025 Federation Cup

“I was really crying a lot; I was struggling every night.” This, according to Jyothi Yarraji, was her frame of mind earlier this month. The problem was a freak hamstring injury she sustained after tripping over a hurdle in training. Worried at the possibility of having to miss the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships 2025, Yarraji rested, cried, prayed and hoped that the injury healed in time. One chance was all she prayed for and on Tuesday, at the 2025 Federation Cup at Kochi, that chance presented itself. And Yarraji grabbed it with both hands. She clocked 13.23s to win the women’s 100m hurdles. ‘Did not train’ Having already breached the qualification mark for the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 at the National Games earlier this year, Yarraji had already set her sights on the marquee event. But after the freak injury earlier this month, Yarraji feared the worst. “I was unable to train. We prepared for the Asian Championships for the last 6-months and for one mistake, I don’t want to punish myself,” she said in …
