A man was killed, while 13 others, including three children, were injured when a makeshift spectators gallery collapsed at Mallanayakanakatte village in Mandya, Karnataka during a kabaddi match on Saturday. The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Papannachari, whereas the injured were rushed to Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment. A divisional level floodlight Kabaddi tournament named Sri Bhyrava Cup 2025 was organised in association with a club Drona Warriors for the players under-23 years of age. The tournament, in its first-ever edition, was scheduled to be held at Sri Doddammna Gudi premises in the village across two days. The tragedy struck when a large crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of the kabaddi match on the opening day. As per a report in The Hindu, N Cheluvarayaswamy – the Minister in charge for Mandya – said that the organisers had necessary permission from the police to conduct the tournament. A man was killed and 13 others, including three children, were injured when a makeshift spectators’ gallery collapsed at a floodlit kabaddi tournament at Mallanayakanakatte village in Mandya district on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Papannachari, aged around 50. The injured were undergoing treatment at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS). Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy, who is also the Minister in charge of Mandya district, said the organisers of the Kabaddi tournament had obtained permission from the police, but the gallery erected for the occasion was not strong enough to support a large number of people who had gathered to watch the event. The Minister said that instructions had been issued to the MIMS authorities to provide free medical treatment to all the injured and ensure that they were properly looked after until their discharge. The injured also include the daughter of the deceased Papannachari. Describing Mr. Papannachari’s death as ‘unfortunate’, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said he would look into the possibility of providing his next of kin with compensation from the government. …

Bihar continues to rope in big ticket sport events to the state Rajgir all set to host the 2025 Women’s Kabaddi World Cup in June later this year. Around 14 teams from across the globe will flock to the State Sports Academy in Rajgir for the competition, which will be held from 1 June, 2025 to 10 June, 2025. The participating teams include India, Iran, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Netherlands, Japan, Poland, Argentina, Hungary, Germany, Kenya, and Uganda. This development comes after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India and Bihar State Sports Authority on Saturday. A teenage kabaddi player was found hanging in his hostel room at the Major Dhyan Chand Sports College in Saifi village of Etawah, Uttar Pradesh on Friday. The boy identified as 17-year-old Rajeev Singh was a grade 9 student and a kabaddi trainee at the college. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Satpal Singh said that Rajeev’s body was found hanging inside his hostel room on the college premises. As per a PTI report, the matter came to light after another student noticed the body through a window in Rajeev’s room and immediately informed the college authorities. The authorities in turn alerted the police. The police personnel brought the body down and investigated the room. No suicide note was found. Rajeev, hailing from Dharawal village in Gorakhpur, is reported to have been training and residing at the college hostel since 2022. He even attended a training session at 5 am IST on Friday morning.
