After news of singer Suman Kalyanpur’s death came in on Sunday night, one noticed two common reactions. One was that she was the closest to sound like Lata Mangeshkar, and the other was that she didn’t get the accolades she deserved.  Both responses may be justified, but the fact remains that Kalyanpur had some iconic hits in the 1960s. Even today, songs like Na Tum Hamein Jaano (Baat Ek Raat Ki, 1962), Tumne Pukaara (Rajkumar, 1964), Na Na Karte Pyar (Jab Jab Phool Khile, 1965), and the super-hit Aajkal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche (Brahmachari, 1968) rule radio shows and talent competitions. Veteran playback singer Suman Kalyanpur passed away on May 31, 2026 in Mumbai at the age of 89. She died due to age-related health complications at her residence. Born Suman Hemmady in Dhaka on January 28, 1937, she was the daughter of Shankar Rao Hemmady, a high-ranking banker. Perhaps her exposure to the Bengali language during her early years explains her command over Bengali songs. The family moved to Mumbai in 1943. She never intended to become a singer and was more interested in painting. After completing her schooling at Mumbai’s prestigious St Columba High School, she enrolled at the JJ School of Arts in 1954. Blessed with a naturally sweet voice, she often sang her favourite Noor Jehan songs for guests during family gatherings. It was at one such gathering that someone suggested she should learn music. She subsequently began training under Pandit Keshav Rao Bhole, a music director associated with Prabhat Films. Suman Kalyanpur was born as Suman Hemmadi. She has recorded songs for movies in several languages including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Angika, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Odia and Punjabi. In one of her previous interviews, the late singer had emphasised on how her family did not approve of public performances before, despite having a strong inclination towards music. However, she did not say no to an offer to sing for the All India Radio in 1952. Then she sang for a Marathi film, Shukra Chi Chandni. It was released in 1953. She began singing in Hindi cinema with the 1954 film Mangu. She sang for movies like Miyan Bibi Razi (1960), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Dil Hi To Hai (1963), Shagoon (1964), Jahan Ara (1964), Sanjh Aur Savera (1964), Noor Jehan (1967), Saathi (1968) and Pakeezah (1971).
