Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis on Friday rewrote the record books as he became the fastest Asian batter to reach 1000 Test runs. Mendis got to the mark with a six as he finished unbeaten on 182 against New Zealand in the second Test at Galle. The 25-year-old Mendis rewrote the previous Asian record held by India’s Vinod Kambli who scaled the mark in 14 innings. Mendis also equalled the legendary Don Bradman as the second fastest ever to the landmark in Test cricket. West Indies’ Everton Weekes and England’s Herbert Sutcliffe continue to hold the benchmark for the quickest batters to 1000 Test runs, both reaching the landmark in only 12 innings. While Weekes achieved it within a year and 14 days of his debut in 1949, Sutcliffe scaled the mark in only 244 days of his debut in 1925. Kamindu Mendis Sets Asian Record with Fifth Test Hundred

The Sri Lanka batter Kamindu Mendis smashes his fifth test century during the second test match on the New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka 2024 on Friday. This is his second hundred of the series and third 50+ scores in many innings. Mendis completed the century in 147 balls which ensured Sri Lanka to go past 400 runs. He also brought up a 100-run partnership with Angelo Mathews in 125 balls for the fourth wicket in the first session on Day 02. He broke the previous record held by Pakistan’s Fawad Alam who smashed five hundreds in 22 innings. He is now fourth joint fastest in all-time in the list of batters to have five test centuries. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis continued his record-breaking Test streak, smashing his fifth hundred in only his 13th innings from debut during the second Test against New Zealand in Galle on Friday. After becoming the first batter to record fifties in eight consecutive Tests from debut on Thursday, Mendis sprinted to his fifth ton and second in successive Tests against the Kiwis off 147 balls. Mendis is the joint-third fastest to five Test hundreds from debut, equalling the legendary Don Bradman and George Headley in 13 innings. Only Everton Weekes (10), Herbert Sutcliffe (12) and Robert Harvey (12) have scaled the mark quicker than Mendis.
