Mohan The Congress constituency committee office at Mayyil in Kannur, Kerala, was allegedly vandalised in the early hours of Friday, with the party alleging involvement of CPI(M) workers amid heightened political tensions following a poll-day stabbing incident. The office in Mayyil town was found damaged with its front window panes smashed and the door broken open. Furniture, including chairs and cupboards, as well as photographs of party leaders, were destroyed by the assailants who allegedly forced entry and ransacked the premises. A district sessions court in Kannur Monday sentenced eight CPI(M) workers, including the brother of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s press secretary, to life imprisonment in connection with the 2005 murder of a BJP worker in Kannur. Another CPI(M) worker was awarded three-year rigorous imprisonment in the case. The court had on Friday found nine persons guilty in the murder of Elambilayi Sooraj, 32, who was hacked to death by the accused on August 7, 2005, at Muzhappilangad village in Kannur. The accused who were awarded life imprisonment include T K Rajeesh, who is already undergoing life imprisonment in the 2012 murder of rebel Marxist leader T P Chandrasekharan, and P M Manoraj, the brother of P M Manoj, Vijayan’s press secretary.
