Haridwar district police on Wednesday issued a detailed traffic diversion and restriction plan for the two-week Kanwar Mela, which begins on Thursday, with the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway set to remain out of bounds for Kanwariya vehicles. (HT photo | Rameshwar Gaur) Under the Kanwar Mela Traffic Plan-2026, the biggest impact is expected on the NH-58 stretch between Narsain, Roorkee and Haridwar, which witnesses heavy movement of kanwariyas, particularly those travelling in vehicles carrying decorated Kanwars. During the peak days of the pilgrimage, NH-58 will be closed to general traffic and all lanes will be opened exclusively for kanwariyas, officials said. Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Haridwar, Navneet Singh Bhullar said the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will not be opened for kanwariya vehicles. The restriction is aimed at ensuring that general commuters have an alternative route for travelling between Delhi and Dehradun and can also reach Haridwar from the Biharigarh side using the newly opened expressway. Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday directed officials to ensure comprehensive arrangements for the Kanwar Yatra and other upcoming festivals, saying the safety, convenience and dignity of every devotee should be the administration’s highest priority. The State government plans to cut 33,776 trees in all for the project, the panel added. Earlier this year, the NGT had taken suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report that the Uttar Pradesh government was planning to cut 1,12,722 trees for the project across the three districts for the proposed route between Muradnagar in Ghaziabad and Purkaji in Muzaffarnagar. The court in August had formed the joint panel to look into the issue. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu A fact-finding panel has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that more than 17,600 trees have been felled in three districts of Uttar Pradesh to make way for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra route. The tribunal was hearing a case related to the alleged felling of more than one lakh trees and shrubs in the protected forest area across the three forest divisions of Ghaziabad, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar for the proposed route between Muradnagar in Ghaziabad and Purkaji in Muzaffarnagar. In an Order dated November 6, a Bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted that a Joint Committee formed earlier to ascertain facts had submitted its interim report. The Committee comprised the Forest Survey of India director, a senior scientist from the Union Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, the State’s Chief Secretary or his representative and the Meerut district magistrate. “The interim report states that as per the information furnished by the Irrigation Department, 17,607 trees have been cut in all three districts …
