Amid Dhurandhar 2 success, Karan Johar slams Bollywood’s ‘hyper-masculinity’ obsession: ‘They’ll all have beards and will smoke’ | Bollywood News

3 min readNew DelhiApr 26, 2026 02:24 PM IST Filmmaker Karan Johar has weighed in on Bollywood’s shifting trends, criticising what he calls a growing herd mentality driven by the success of hyper-masculine, male-led films like Animal and Dhurandhar. During a chat with The Week, Karan pointed out the recent male-centric narratives in films, in which aggression and machismo are the main focus. “If one film works in a certain zone, there will be 10 more. So you will see 10 more high-octane testosterone movies where men are just walking in slow motion for no reason and going nowhere in particular, but they will be walking in that way. They’ll all have beards and they will all smoke. Apparently, that’s what women like to watch, or at least, that’s what the men think,” he said. Having said that, the filmmaker pointed out that the only ray of hope for variety is the digital medium, where stories are more interesting. ‘Saroj Khan didn’t like me, working with her traumatised me, says Karan Johar: ‘She was scary, made me run for my life’ | Bollywood News

4 min readNew DelhiFeb 9, 2026 10:11 PM IST Karan Johar may be one of the most sought-after filmmakers in the Indian film industry today, but his journey began far away from the director’s chair. He started out as an assistant to Aditya Chopra on the 1995 classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, working as a costume assistant—a phase he now recalls with equal parts nostalgia and trauma. In fact, Karan Johar has openly admitted that legendary choreographer Saroj Khan “made his life hell” during the shoot. “I was traumatised,” Karan said while revisiting those early days. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Karan shared a memorable incident from the filming of the iconic song “Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna”. While the costumes were primarily designed by Manish Malhotra and Aditya Chopra’s mother Pamela Chopra, it was Karan’s responsibility to ensure everything came together on set. “At that time, the costume dada was my biggest ally,” Karan recalled, adding, “Manish would come in the morning, hand over the clothes, and leave. I was the costume assistant, and …

Rishi Kapoor caught Karan Johar lying as he travelled to attend Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra’s secret Italy wedding: ‘Still petrified of him’ | Bollywood News

Directors Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra have had a long working relationship. They have another thing in common, which is actor Rani Mukerji. While Johar has only worked with Rani, Aditya has been married to her for 12 years. In a recent conversation held at the coveted Yash Raj Studios, Rani and Karan discussed her career, their relationship and the invisible man of Bollywood, Rani’s husband, Aditya Chopra. After talking about her upcoming release, Mardaani 3, Karan wanted to talk about Rani ‘the human’, not Rani ‘the actor’. He started that by talking about Aditya and said, “Now you are married to a myth, and even conjecture about him doesn’t exist. Fortunately, we do know that he does exist. We have had the pleasure of spending time together. I am petrified of him because he carries this paranoia of no image going out. He used to tell me, ‘I am not coming to your house because the press will be there,’ and I used to keep telling him that there is no press.” ALSO READ: …

Ranveer Singh, Ayushmann Khurrana faced casting couch; many fear working with gay directors, says journalist | Bollywood News

When we talk about Bollywood, the conversation is often dominated by gossip—who’s dating whom, who’s engaged, who’s vacationing together. Audiences are endlessly curious about a star’s relationship status, bank balance, fees, and even their sexuality. Over the years, there have also been rumours about certain male actors being in relationships with male directors. However, none of those involved ever chose to clarify or address them, leaving such rumours without any real substance. Now, senior journalist Simi Chandoke has shed light on some uncomfortable realities of the film industry. Speaking on the podcast Verinteresting, Simi shared that even if there are bisexual actors in Bollywood, most are afraid to come out openly. Explaining one of the reasons, she said, “Suppose a Bollywood hero openly admits that he is gay or bisexual. When he appears on screen romancing a heroine, will audiences accept him the same way?” She further added, “There are several directors—I won’t name them—but there is one particular director who has worked with actors like Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, and …

Karan Johar, one of Bollywood’s most influential filmmakers and the force behind Dharma Productions, recently revealed the deep emotional scars from his childhood that continue to shape him today — especially as a parent. In a heartfelt conversation with Sania Mirza for Myntra’s Glam Stream, Karan opened up about his struggles with body image, bullying, and self-worth, and how those experiences have made him a “paranoid parent” to his twins, Yash and Roohi. He confessed that while a part of him wants his children to live freely and explore life, another part constantly fears they might face the same trauma he endured — particularly in today’s world dominated by social media. Karan Johar’s name can’t be used without consent, says Bombay HC as it passes judgment on movie blatantly copying his name

The Bombay High Court has ruled in favor of filmmaker Karan Johar and blocked the release of the film Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, stating that the unauthorized use of his name violates his personality rights and could damage his reputation, as per a report by Live Law. The court’s order, issued on May 7, 2025, upholds an earlier decision from March 7, 2025, which had placed a temporary stay on the film’s release. Karan Johar had filed a legal complaint claiming he had no involvement with the project and had not given the filmmakers permission to use his name. The film’s title features two characters named “Karan” and “Johar,” who are portrayed as Bollywood directors, mirroring Johar’s real-life identity. This raised serious concerns about the filmmakers attempting to falsely associate the film with him. A division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Makarand Karnik agreed that the movie appeared to exploit Johar’s identity and public image for promotional purposes and commercial gain, without his consent. In an earlier hearing, Justice Riyaz …
