Sonali Bendre, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor: How OTT is reimagining ’90s leading ladies | Web-series News

Sonali Bendre, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor: How OTT is reimagining ’90s leading ladies | Web-series News

John Matthew Matthan’s 1999 cop thriller Sarfarosh was way ahead of its time. The grit and grime in Aamir Khan’s character of Ajay Singh Rathod is in the same zone as the no-nonsense investigators in the best streaming shows today. Its political astuteness is also as apt as the most layered police procedurals on OTT. While watching another such crime thriller, Raakh, on Prime Video India, I couldn’t believe how starkly different roles Sonali Bendre played in both the projects. Of course, it’s a testament to her range as a performer, but also speaks volumes of Bollywood’s tendency in the 1990s to paint its leading ladies in candy-coated colours without exploiting the depth they always had. Rising from the Raakh No wonder that Sonali said she was reduced to “comic relief” in Sarfarosh. While she didn’t completely make a fool of herself with her ceaseless “don’t mind” chatter, the heavy lifting was reserved for Aamir and Naseeruddin Shah. Even Surekha Sikri had more impact in her cameo as the mother of Sultan. It was pretty …

Karisma Kapoor on 35 years of debut film Prem Qaidi: ‘I was straight out of school’ | Bollywood News

Karisma Kapoor has completed 35 years in the film industry today. Her debut movie, K Murali Mohana Rao’s musical drama Prem Qaidi released on June 21, 1991. Karisma was just 16 when she starred opposite Harish, who was a year younger than her. The actor can’t believe it’s been 35 years, and shares the memories of her first film with SCREEN in an exclusive interview. “My first movie released four days before my 17th birthday. So, I was straight out of school. I went to junior college for a few days, and then I was straight on the set of Prem Qaidi. I do remember the mahurat shot also. Time has flown by really fast,” says Karisma. One of the early challenges of facing the camera in the early 1990s, she recalls, was to face the scorching light that accompanied action. “The lighting was very harsh. We used to struggle to barely open our eyes,” adds the actor. Since then, she’s witnessed several technical changes happen in moviemaking, including the transition from film to digital …

Karisma Kapoor-led Brown faced 3-year delay, was re-edited, says writer Mayukh Ghosh: ‘We were in limbo’ | Interview

Crime thrillers traditionally revolve around one question: Who did it? But for writer Mayukh Ghosh, that was never the most important mystery at the heart of Brown. The psychological crime thriller, starring Karisma Kapoor as detective Rita Brown, began as a conventional whodunit before evolving into something far more layered. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Mayukh revealed that the show’s defining creative choice was shifting the focus away from identifying the killer and toward understanding their motive. Brown starring Karisma Kapoor survived delay with rework. Brown was originally a straightforward whodunit According to Mayukh, the version of Brown he first encountered was quite different from what audiences eventually saw. “Zee Studios wanted to revive an old project based on the novel City of Death and they were looking for someone to pick it up,” he says. “At that time it was a pure whodunit.” But the team soon felt that a simple killer-identity mystery wouldn’t hold up for today’s viewers. “Once I came on board, we realised audiences today are cinema-literate. A pure whodunit might not …

It’s a common thing to say, but for me, to say something about Lolo is actually very difficult because she’s someone who is not only a fabulous human being, but she’s a dedicated mother, she’s such a hardworking actor. Till today I think every actress in our country looks up to Lolo because they want to be like her. They want to dress like her. They want to look like her. They want to dance like her. I think every actress wants that adulation that Lolo had in the ’90s, that quintessential …
