Hundreds of students, accompanied by parents, hit the streets in south Kashmir and marched towards the office of the Deputy Commissioner. “Most students are from poor families. What is the sin of the students? How can the administration mar their future?” said a parent. Shopian legislator Shabir Kullay also joined the protesters and demanded steps to ensure the students’ career is not affected. Over 800 students are enrolled at the seminary-cum-school. “Illegal activities should not be tolerated. However, the future of innocent students should not suffer. The closure of the institute is unfortunate,” said Mr. Kullay. He said the government should intervene to “ensure there was no academic loss for the students”. Officials said the district administration was mulling to have the students admitted to nearby schools. On April 28, the seminary-cum-school was sealed under provisions of …

Twin earthquakes hit Jammu and Kashmir`s Doda; no damage reported

Twin earthquakes hit Jammu and Kashmir`s Doda; no damage reported

Two earthquakes struck the Jammu and Kashmir district of Doda in the early hours of Sunday, triggering tremors across the region. The first earthquake, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale, was recorded at around 4:22 a.m. at a depth of 10 km.  Shortly after, a second tremor of 3.0 magnitude occurred at approximately 4:37 a.m., with its epicentre located at latitude 33.090°N and longitude 75.928°E, also at a depth of 10 km. Doda lies in the seismically sensitive Himalayan belt, where frequent low-intensity earthquakes are common due to the ongoing convergence of tectonic plates.  As a result, such tremors are regularly recorded in the region and typically do not lead to significant damage or strong ground shaking. Neighbouring areas, including Kishtwar and Bhaderwah, are also prone to similar seismic activity, although most incidents remain minor in nature and have limited impact. Experts attribute the region`s vulnerability to the continuous collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making the entire Himalayan arc one of the most earthquake-prone zones in the world. This includes regions spanning …

A Wheat Starch Enjoyed as a Prize Ingredient in Kashmir’s Winters

A Wheat Starch Enjoyed as a Prize Ingredient in Kashmir’s Winters

Every summer, homes in the upper regions of Kashmir prepare for the impending winters by gathering and preparing nishasta. This treasured wheat starch is often turned into a halwa, and eaten for warmth (and recovery) during winter. Umer Farooq Zargar finds out more. In many Kashmiri homes,  winter mornings begin quietly: snow that covers rooftops, blocks roads and cuts electricity,  people wear pherans and use kangries (fire pot) for heat. In some kitchens in the upper reaches of Kashmir, mornings see someone in the family cooking nishasta or nishaat (wheat starch) . The nishasta is usually consumed as a warm drink, or a halwa — dried starch is mixed with water to form a smooth paste, sugar is added, and the mixture is cooked slowly in ghee over low heat, stirred continuously until it thickens and turns a shade darker. For taste, some add dry fruits like almonds, and cashews. Very few households in her village now prepare nishasta from scratch. This dish is mostly eaten in the Northern Kashmir districts of Baramulla, Kupwara and …
