New Delhi, Two prominent civil society groups from Ladakh Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance on Friday claimed to have reached an ‘in-principle understanding’ with the Centre on providing constitutional safeguards to the Union Territory. The discussions took place during the sub-committee comprising top representatives from LAB and KDA and also from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Meanwhile, they also reiterated their persisting demand for the sixth schedule to safeguard the region’s rights.  Hajan Fathima Bano, an 87-year-old Apex activist, expressed her concerns over the detention of Wangchuk along with the other people of Ladakh. “We’ve heard they have been apprehended. They didn’t go to engage in conflict; they went to advocate for the sixth schedule on behalf of the people of Ladakh. We are willing to give our lives for them. KDA urges Karnataka government to implement 5% reservation in education for Kannadigas living in border regions and outside the State

File photo | Photo Credit: H S MANJUNATH In the interest of the future of Kannadigas living in border regions and outside the State, the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has urged the State Government to effectively implement the 5% reservation which was ordered in 2011 for admissions to higher education and professional courses. Prof. Purushottham Bilimale, Chairman of KDA, who has written a letter to the State government in this regard, said that although 13 years have passed since the 5% reservation was introduced in education for Kannadigas in border regions and outside the state, the authorities have neglected to implement it. Many districts, including Raichur, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Kolar, Bengaluru Rural district, share the border with Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Kerala.
