IMD issues heavy rain and thunderstorm alert across Kerala till June 2 amid monsoon advance

Kerala is set to witness widespread rain, thunderstorms and strong winds till June 2 as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday forecast favourable conditions for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over large parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during the next two to three days.  According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance further into more parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep region, the southwest Bay of Bengal, the central-east Bay of Bengal, the central-west Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal and parts of the northeast Bay of Bengal over the coming days. IMD declares a yellow rainfall alert for 12 districts in Kerala

May 22, 2025. | Photo Credit: THULASI KAKKAT The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy pre-monsoon showers across Kerala on Friday (Mauy 23, 2025). It has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts, excluding Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.  The weather system catalysing the monsoon over Kerala will likely intensify in the next 48 hours. The IMD is reportedly poised to declare the onset of the monsoon, with rainfall intensifying.  Rough seas  The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information (INCOIS) has issued a special alert for Kerala’s coastal districts. It has warned of choppy seas and tidal surges.  It has predicted waves reaching a height of up to 3.2 metres in Kozhikode and Kannur coastal localities. The INCOIS has advised fishers to beach their boats and safely anchor their sea-going vessels.  The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised sea-faring fishers to exercise caution. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts.  The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts.  The IMD has stated that Kerala will continue to receive moderate to heavy rains until May 23.
