IMD forecasts early monsoon arrival in India within next 4-5 days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated an early push of the southwest monsoon, with conditions turning favourable for its advance over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands during the next four to five days. The development comes amid widespread weather activity across the country, triggered by multiple cyclonic circulations, troughs and an approaching Western Disturbance, bringing a mix of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds and heatwave conditions. Heavy rainfall alert across southern states According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe and south Interior Karnataka over the next few days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected across several regions, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and parts of peninsular India. IMD declares a yellow rainfall alert for 12 districts in Kerala

May 22, 2025. | Photo Credit: THULASI KAKKAT The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy pre-monsoon showers across Kerala on Friday (Mauy 23, 2025). It has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts, excluding Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.  The weather system catalysing the monsoon over Kerala will likely intensify in the next 48 hours. The IMD is reportedly poised to declare the onset of the monsoon, with rainfall intensifying.  Rough seas  The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information (INCOIS) has issued a special alert for Kerala’s coastal districts. It has warned of choppy seas and tidal surges.  It has predicted waves reaching a height of up to 3.2 metres in Kozhikode and Kannur coastal localities. The INCOIS has advised fishers to beach their boats and safely anchor their sea-going vessels.  The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised sea-faring fishers to exercise caution.
