As part of its platinum jubilee celebrations, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur on Monday unveiled a special postage stamp issued by India Post and launched discussions on a proposed strategic outreach initiative in Houston, USA. IIT Kharagpur forms committee to look into ways to prevent campus suicides | Kolkata News

IIT Kharagpur on Saturday said that it has constituted a 10-member committee to look into ways to ensure the well-being of students in the campus. The committee comprising psychologists, legal experts and police professionals, educationists, counsellors, and alumni members will assess the factors (primary, secondary or tertiary) affecting the mental health and well-being of students, faculty and staff. It will also identify the key challenges (such as inadequate resources,administrative shortfalls, academic environment, but not limited to) that hinder the resolution of mental health issues on campus, a statement said. Kolkata: A student of IIT-Kharagpur was found dead inside his hostel room, an institute official said on Monday. Shaon Malik, a third-year student of Electrical Engineering, was found hanging inside the room by his parents who had come to meet him on Sunday. His parents and institute personnel had to forcibly open the door of the hostel room after he did not respond to repeated calls, the official said. Malik had spoken to his parents over phone the previous night and “things seemed perfectly normal”, according to the official. The institute will conduct an internal probe into the death and take steps to prevent such incidents in future, he said. A senior police officer said the post-mortem has been completed and the process was videographed. Investigation is underway, he said. IITs tap foundations, alumni to raise funds

The prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are facing a pressing challenge: a shortage of individuals adept at fundraising from companies and alumni. To overcome this, IITs are looking at the US to secure funds by highlighting their accomplishments in science and technology. Mahesh Panchagnula, dean of (alumni and corporate relations), at IIT Madras, said the concept of alumni generously contributing to the institutions is still at a nascent stage in India. “We are strengthening our fundraising efforts in the US and reaching out to more people in India.” IIT Madras is one of the primary beneficiaries, having received ₹578 crore in the past four years. In FY23, it had collected ₹231 crore, one of the highest amounts in recent years.
