2 min readMumbaiJun 24, 2026 01:18 AM IST The District Sessions Court in Nashik on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to Kalpana Kharat, wife of self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, in connection with an alleged land fraud and black magic case. Kalpana is named an accused in a case filed in Sinnar police station for offences including cheating, criminal intimidation of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Maharashtra Prevention & Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. The complaint relates to a land plot spread over 16.5 acres. The owners of the land wanted to sell the land in 2003 and had met Kharat, who dealt with land deals. Kharat allegedly told the owners that someone had died by suicide in a well on the land. The allegations in the FIR are that Kharat first performed some rituals at the spot and subsequently prepared a sale deed for the land, showing that he had purchased it for less than the market value rate. Social activist Anjali Damania on Monday raised doubts over jailed self-styled godman Ashok Kharat’s calls on the day of and after Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar’s plane crash in January. Police are investigating the financial transactions between Kharat and Patil. On Friday, Damania released another CDR, claiming Kharat made calls to politicians, including deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders Sunil Tatkare, Rupali Chakankar, Bharatiya Janata Party ministers Chandrakant Patil and Ashish Shelar. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the rape-accused self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, has detained his son from Nashik city for questioning and is also searching for his wife, police said, PTI reported. At least 10 FIRs, eight for alleged sexual assault or exploitation and two for cheating, have been registered against Kharat at Sarkarwada police station in Nashik, while the SIT has received more than 100 complaints over the phone against him. An SIT team reached Kharat`s house in Karmayogi Nagar on Tuesday and detained his son, Harshvardhan, who was then taken to the Maharashtra Police Academy (MPA) for questioning, police sources said, the news agency reported.  Son detained after wife remains absconding Investigators are also trying to trace Kharat`s wife, Kalpana, but the SIT team failed to find her at the residence and detained their son instead, they added. The recent arrest of Ashok Kharat reportedly gave courage to a woman to file a complaint against a self-styled godman in Maharashtra`s Palghar district, reported the PTI. She alleged that the self-proclaimed godman had allegedly raped her. He has been booked for allegedly raping the 35-year-old woman after posing as an incarnation of a deity, police said on Friday, as per PTI. The woman gathered the courage to file a complaint following the recent arrest of former Merchant Navy officer and self-styled godman Ashok Kharat in Nashik, an official said, according to the PTI. The police said that the woman first came into contact with the accused through Facebook in 2023. In December that year, he visited the woman in Pune and allegedly deceived her by claiming he was an incarnation of Mahadev and that she was his “Parvati,” as per the FIR.
