The Gauhati High Court on Friday rejected an anticipatory bail plea filed by Congress leader Pawan Khera in connection with an FIR lodged in Assam over his alleged defamatory remarks against the wife of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. A single-judge Bench of Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia had reserved the final order on Tuesday following extensive arguments from both sides. The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea of Congress leader Pawan Khera seeking protection against possible coercive action till April 20 in a case lodged against him for levelling allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma`s wife. The top court asked Khera to move a court of competent jurisdiction in Assam for anticipatory bail in the case. An Assam Police team on Tuesday reached the Delhi residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera for questioning and carried out a search in connection with a case linked to allegations made against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family, officials said. Speaking with reporters outside the Congress leader’s house, Assam police DCP Debojit Nath said that Khera was not found at his residence. However, he said that a search was carried out and electronic devices were seized. Some “incriminating material” was found, he said.
