The van transporting passengers from Lakhimpur to Sisaiya collided head-on with a truck travelling in the opposite direction. All nine passengers aboard the van, along with the driver, perished in the accident. A school teacher returning to work, a young engineer preparing to depart for a job in the Gulf, and a daily wage laborer supporting his struggling family were among the ten individuals who lost their lives, leaving families across three districts devastated. Hours after a six-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in a village under Sadar Kotwali area on Tuesday evening, a joint team of Lakhimpur police and SWAT unit arrested the accused following a brief exchange of fire near Sharda canal on Ravhi-Saraicha road late on Tuesday night, officials said. The accused opened fire on the police team in an attempt to evade arrest, following which he was injured in the leg in retaliatory firing and apprehended, the SSP said. An inmate lodged in the Lakhimpur Kheri district jail allegedly committed suicide in his barrack on Friday, officials said. The body has been sent for a post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.(Representational Photo) The deceased has been identified as Suresh Verma (50), a resident of Madhaupurwa village under Dhaurahra police station area in Lakhimpur Kheri district. District jail superintendent PD Saloniya said Verma was brought to jail from Dhaurahra police station on Thursday evening. His body was found hanging from an iron angle in the toilet of the barrack early Friday morning. He said Verma had gone to the toilet under knowledge of the barrack keepers, however, when he did not turn up for a long time, the barrack keepers informed the jail authorities, who recovered the dead body. Five people were killed and one person was injured after their car plunged into a canal on the Dhakherwa-Girijapuri barrage road, police said on Wednesday. The six were returning to Bahraich after attending a wedding in Lakhimpur when the accident took place on Tuesday nigh, Sub-Inspector Abhishek Singh told PTI. The deceased were identified as Jitendra (23), Ghanshyam (25), Lalji (45), Ajimulla (45) and Surendra (56), all from Bahraich district. The bodies have been sent for postmortem. “The lone survivor has been identified as Suraj alias Babbu, also a resident of Bahraich, who was driving the vehicle. 20-year-old man shot dead on busy road in Lakhimpur Kheri district of UP

A 20-year-old man was chased and shot dead by around five assailants on a busy road near a police outpost in the Mishrana locality in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, an officer said on Tuesday. According to news agency PTI, the youth, identified as Amogh Seth, was a resident of Seth Colony in Hathipur. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A bookstore employee, Aditya Kashyap, was also injured in the hand when the attackers opened fire as the youth sought shelter in the shop, the police said. The employee is reported to be out of danger. The assailants fled the scene on two bikes after the incident, which occurred on Monday evening, PTI reported. The Supreme Court Wednesday asked Ashish Mishra, accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, to respond to charges against him of intimidating some witnesses. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan gave him four weeks time to file his response. The court was hearing a plea, which alleged that Mishra had threatened some witnesses. The applicants also produced some photographs in support of their claim.  Senior Advocate Siddharth Dave, who appeared for Mishra, denied the charges and said that such applications are filed “not for the Court, but for those outside”. When the bench referred to the photographs, he said Mishra was not there. The court asked him to file an affidavit clarifying his position. In an earlier case, the Supreme Court told Ashish Mishra to carefully comply with his bail conditions. The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought an explanation from Ashish Mishra, the prime accused in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case and son of former Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra, on the allegations of threatening witnesses and breaching other bail conditions imposed by the apex court. A bench, headed by Justice Surya Kant, granted four weeks to Ashish Mishra to file an affidavit to the plea seeking cancellation of bail granted to him. Two children were killed and their parents hospitalised in Lekhimpur Kheri due to asphyxia caused by a coal fire lit in their room to beat the cold while they slept, police here said on Tuesday. The incident occurred in Mailani town of Lekhimpur Kheri on Monday night, they said, adding that the room had no ventilation. The victims were identified as Ramesh Vishwakarma, his wife Renu, daughter Anshika (8), and son Krishna (7). Ramesh`s sister-in-law Uma Devi knocked on his door Tuesday morning but got no response, following which the door was broken down and all four were found unconscious, police officials said. They were rushed to the Mailani health centre in Lekhimpur Kheri, where Anshika and Krishna were declared dead, while Ramesh and Renu were taken to the Kheri district hospital. Mailani police station in-charge Pankaj Tripathi said the bodies were sent for a post-mortem examination.
