Kidambi Srikanth finishes as a runner-up at the US Open 2026

Kidambi Srikanth’s wait for a BWF World Tour title extended further as he went down against Chinese Taipei’s Su Li Yang in the semifinals of the US Open Super300 Tournament on Sunday The 33-year-old, facing an opponent who is nine years younger than him, pushed himself to find that winning momentum but could not avoid a 21-15, 16-21, 21-9 loss in an hour and nine minutes. It was Su who got off the blocks fast in the opening game as he took a 10-5 lead. Srikanth levelled the scores at 10-10 before the Taipei shuttler won seven consecutive points to run away with the game. Srikanth kept pace with Su in the second game for the first half and then changed the tempo to move from 15-13 to 20-13 before converting his fourth game point. However, the effort did take a toll on Srikanth’s tired legs. Though the former world number one stayed neck-and-neck with Su till 9-7, the 24-year-old then took eight straight points to seal the match. En route to the final, Srikanth …

Kidambi Srikanth falters at last step in US Open

4 min readJun 29, 2026 07:59 AM IST Kidambi Srikanth delayed a change of shirt to the very end of the mid-set break in the decider. So when the chair umpire refused to allow him a change of tee, summoning him to resume, he was taken aback. Things pretty much unravelled from that 7-11 juncture, as Srikanth lost the US Open finals, despite possessing the game to counter Taiwanese Su Li Yang. He lost 15-21, 21-16, 9-21. There’s very little to be done in badminton once the umpire from her perch orders you get going after a break. It was one of those things he absent-mindedly left to the very last second after swiggling water in the middle of a decider break, given the game was at scorching pace. Maybe the speed of exchanges and deliberate rushing (a legit tactic) by Su was wearing him down anyway after his Titanic semifinal win on Saturday. But Srikanth missed an opportunity to win a title on Tour again. The game is still intact. The fitness has no …

10-8 legend move, serve into net at match point, risky winner on backline

‘You’re In Titans Territory’ read a banner across the playing hall at Fullerton, California where fans stood out in a refreshingly non-darkened competition hall of badminton’s Super 300 US Open. You could see the spectators gasp, groan and gush as India’s eternal man Kidambi Srikanth and Japan’s newest shuttle semi-automatic, Yudai Okomoto, played out a classic in the Saturday semis. The empty seats were so on-brand American for badminton, but the titan was indeed putting up a show for those that bothered to turn up. For, Kidambi Srikanth was on-brand too: chaotic, clumsy, cathartic and colossal. He took leads, squandered them by risking the lines, overturned a point that had gone in his favour, served into the net at match point, and finally sent a scary push – on the line again, before falling to the knees in relief. He played it fair, and for once, the universe didn’t slap him in the face for being nice. Coach Parupalli Kashyap remembers the umpteen times in practice and matches when Srikanth calls it fairly if shuttles …

HS Prannoy stuns world no.5 Jonatan Christie

Star Indian shuttler HS Prannoy registered a massive win in the opening round of the 2026 Singapore Open Super750 Tournament on Wednesday. He came from behind to stun the world No. 5 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in three games, 10-21, 21-12, 21-18, to reach the round of 16. After a disappointing first game, the 33-year-old made a good comeback in the second game, showcasing his power game to dominate the rallies and push a decider. In the third game, both players had a steady start, keeping each other within reach and in the end, Prannoy won the final three points and won the match. This was the 10th meeting between the two players, with Christie leading their head-to-head 7-2, but Prannoy finally got the better of him after five years. On the other hand, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also moved to the second round with a three-game win.
