KL Rahul on Tuesday opened up about why he chose to part ways with Lucknow Super Giants and make himself available for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions. After the retention process had ended and Rahul was not retained by the franchise, Sanjiv Goenka, LSG’s owner, was straightforward when he revealed the reasons why their decided to retain certain players and let others go. “The first retention was an automatic choice and happened within two minutes, that is Nicholas Pooran. We had a very simple mindset to go in with players who have a mindset to win, who put the team before their personal goals and aspirations,” he had said. Among the released players from the franchises Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals), Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders), and KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants) have caught the headlines. Lucknow Super Giants have appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their mentor ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The appointment will mark Zaheer’s return to the management fold in the IPL after two years, having previously spent five seasons with five-time champions Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2022. Zaheer will take over the role that was left vacant last season after current India head coach Gautam Gambhir moved to take over the Kolkata Knight Riders mentorship last season. While KKR went onto lift the title, Lucknow finished seventh in the standings in their third IPL season. Zaheer first worked as the director of cricket with the Mumbai Indians before moving onto the role of head of global development of the franchise.
