VIBHU The Kochi Corporation has issued Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) a 10-day deadline to resolve traffic logjam and waterlogging caused by potholed roads and blocked drains along the stretch in front of St. Martin’s Church at Palarivattom, where works on the second phase of the Kochi metro from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark are under way. The ultimatum followed an inspection of the affected stretch by a delegation led by Mayor V.K. Minimol, accompanied by officials of the city traffic police and KMRL, after mounting public outcry over the nightmarish conditions worsened by the onset of the monsoon. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Wednesday said it was working closely with various stakeholders to minimise public inconvenience caused by the construction of the Phase II corridor connecting Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium and Infopark via Kakkanad. KMRL said in a statement that construction activities inevitably caused temporary inconvenience to road users at certain locations. “KMRL is working closely with traffic authorities, local bodies, and other stakeholder agencies to minimise public inconvenience and address issues related to traffic management, road conditions, drainage, and public safety on a continuous basis,” it said. The response comes amid widespread criticism of metro works causing severe traffic congestion along the 10.58-km stretch, mainly at Palarivattom and Kakkanad. Kochi Water Metro ferries berthed at the High Court terminal. As it steps into its third year, the Water Metro is set to expand its operations both within Kerala and across India. The fleet of 19 air conditioned hybrid-electric Water Metro ferries that are operating in Kochi transported a total of 4 million commuters across 10 terminals in the Greater Kochi area, during the past two years. They were from among the twenty-three 100-passenger ferries for which Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) had placed an order with Cochin Shipyard. This first-of-its-kind water transport system in India that aims to introduce 78 ferries in the Greater Kochi area in a phased manner is being implemented by the Kerala government. The Phase Two extension from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium  to Infopark will span 11.20 km and has been named the metro’s Pink Line. Around ₹140 crore is required for the pay-and-park project, primarily for land acquisition, said Loknath Behera, managing director of the metro agency. “The proposal has been submitted to the State government, which has assured serious consideration. To reduce costs and address space constraints, the nine stations on the corridor have been designed smaller than those in the Aluva-Thripunithura Phase One corridor.” “Of late, there has been growing public demand for adequate parking near metro stations.
