PM announces compensation as Kolkata warehouse collapse death toll reaches 9

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the nine persons who died in the collapse of the roof of an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area.  The Prime Minister also announced assistance of Rs 50,000 each for the 20 people injured in the incident. In a statement on X, the PMO said that the state government is working to provide all possible assistance to the people affected by the shed collapse. “The mishap in Kolkata yesterday is saddening. An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each will be given from PMNRF to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the mishap. The injured would be given Rs 50,000. The state government is working around the clock to ensure that those affected receive all possible assistance: PM Narendra Modi,” read the post. The southwest monsoon has become active over the state under the influence of favourable wind patterns and a strong moisture flow from the Bay of Bengal, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata. For South Bengal, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days. Districts including East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Purulia and Bankura are likely to experience thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph. As per the sources, locals were staging a protest against Majumdar outside the flat in Bidhannagar, which led to an altercation. The police then arrived at the spot, detained Majumdar, and took him to Bidhannagar North police station, where he was subsequently arrested. He faces charges of illegally occupying a flat, and making derogatory remarks against and threatening the woman landowner. It is learnt that Majumdar had been illegally occupying the Bidhannagar area-based flat for the last around 12 years. He reportedly rented the flat in 2012, the lease agreement for which expired in 2015. However, it is being alleged that Majumdar neither renewed the lease after that nor did he vacate the flat.
