How Kolkata Doctors Took a Leaf Out of Mamata’s Playbook to Ensure Top Cop’s Removal

Mamata Banerjee’s trademark style of politics is taking causes close to her to the streets — a move that helped her oust the Left government after a 34-year rule in 2011. Since then, the West Bengal chief minister is not known to back down from a fight — until now. Cut to 2024 and street politics has returned but, this time, it’s the chief minister who is on the back foot with the state’s doctors adopting her trademark style of protesting on the roads against the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The 35-day strike by the doctors, followed by seven days of dharna, forced Banerjee to change the Kolkata commissioner of police; North Kolkata deputy commissioner; Director, Medical Education (DME); and Director, Health Service (DHS) — all demands put forth by the protesters. Sources said the government was in no mood to reshuffle top officials but was forced to buckle under pressure. Is Kolkata’s Top Cop Vineet Goyal the New Rajeev Kumar? CM’s Trusted Enforcer Under Fire Over RG Kar Case

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal is at the epicentre of a brewing storm over the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder. The situation makes one wonder – Is Vineet Goyal the new Rajeev Kumar, who is currently holding the position of DGP, West Bengal? With mounting criticism over his handling of the RG Kar Medical College case, parallels are being drawn. Like Kumar, Goyal is seen as one of the ‘key enforcers’ – as claimed by the doctors and the political opponents – for the ruling establishment, accused of bending over backwards to protect the government’s image and to please the Chief Minister. As discontent swells within the police force and on the streets, Goyal’s actions could be carving out a similar legacy of controversy and political manoeuvering. Post the vandalisation of the hospital on August 14, Goyal has been accused of inept handling of the situation, as alleged by the junior doctors. His mishandling of the series of incidents, and not acknowledging or addressing the procedural lapses, fierce criticism and mass protests, have …
