IUML leader Kunhalikutty firm on judicial probe into bar bribery claim

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader P.K. Kunhalikutty has said a judicial probe should be instituted into the claim that a section of bar owners were asked to shore up funds to influence the liquor policy of the Left Democratic Front government in the State. He told the media here on May 25 (Sunday) that there was something suspicious in the whole episode, which should not be dismissed as a minor thing. “There seems to be some fire, because of which there is some smoke. That is why the United Democratic Front pointed out that a police investigation would not do and an independent judicial probe should be ordered into it. We shall see,” he said. Action sought against illegal fishing off Kozhikode coast

Even as the marine enforcement squad and the Coastal Police have claimed of an intensified patrol along the coastline, fishermen and fishing boat owners in Kozhikode have expressed displeasure over the increasing presence of boats and fishers from other States, who allegedly resort to illegal fishing methods. The demand for action against such illegal practices has come at a time when local fishers are witnessing a huge drop in daily catch and active working days owing to unexpected climate change. “High-beam lights are being used by fishers from other States, depleting fishing resources. Pair trawling using double nets has also made a re-entry,” said Abdul Majeed, a fisherman from the Chombala harbour. He added that enforcement squads mostly targeted local fishermen. Some fishing boats reportedly cross the permitted distance from the shore for fishing. The aim is to evade the eyes of marine patrol squads which cover a limited distance. Entries pour in for Kerala Tourism’s Souvenir Challenge

A year after the concept was floated, Kerala Tourism has reinvigorated its Souvenir Challenge, which aims at strengthening its Souvenir Network Project, by creating an inventory of cute and environment friendly artefacts for tourists to take home from Kerala. The Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission of Kerala, which is in charge of the network, has invited entries from people across the State to take part in the challenge and develop products that could be marketed across the globe as the State’s pride. “This is the first effort of its kind being made in the State and in this first edition of the souvenir network, we have around 100 people registered from different parts of the State,” said K. Rupesh Kumar, State Coordinator of Responsible Tourism Mission. The State has announced cash prize for best of the fifteen selected souvenirs. The first prize is ₹ 1 lakh while ₹ 50,000 and ₹ 25,000 respectively are second and third prizes. Moreover, one artist from each district will get a prize of ₹10,000. Police register case after woman dies following childbirth in Kannur

The police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the death of a 28-year-old woman who passed away at a hospital in Payyannur after giving birth through surgery. V. Athira, 28, a resident of Kangol North, underwent surgery and delivered a baby boy on Thursday at 3 p.m. Following the delivery, Athira was moved to the post-operative ward. However, she reportedly collapsed due to low blood pressure. The relatives rushed her to the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital. However, Athira’s life could not be saved. Her husband K.V. Abhay, who was abroad, arrived home on Friday morning after being informed of the her death. Meanwhile, the Payyannur police registered a case of unnatural death and conducted an inquest. The body will be handed over to relatives after post-mortem. Newborn will be taken care of by the realtives. Source link
