Venugopal, General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Chief Minister-designate D.K. Shivakumar. Kerala Assembly elections: Congress expels rebel KPCC member in Taliparamba

Kerala Assembly elections: Congress expels rebel KPCC member in Taliparamba

The Congress has expelled Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) member Koyyam Janardhanan for contesting as a rebel candidate in Taliparamba against the UDF-backed Independent, intensifying factional tensions in the constituency ahead of the Kerala Assembly polls. The disciplinary action was taken after Mr. Janardhanan refused to withdraw his candidature despite repeated persuasion by party leadership, including direct intervention by KPCC president Sunny Joseph. Party sources said both KPCC and District Congress Committee leaders had made efforts to bring him back, but he remained firm on his decision. Mr. Janardhanan had openly opposed the UDF’s decision to support T.K. Govindan, a former CPI(M) leader contesting as an Independent with UDF backing in Taliparamba. Protesting against this move, Mr. Janardhanan announced his candidacy, joined initially by Youth Congress Kannur district president Vigil Mohanan, who later withdrew from the contest. Maintaining that he “must honour his commitment to the people”, Mr. Janardhanan said he would go ahead with the campaign. He is scheduled to begin his constituency tour from Saturday. Meanwhile, DCC president Martin George alleged that Mr. …

KPCC chief seeks apology from CPI(M), Veena George over ‘false propaganda’ and attacks on Congress offices

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph on Saturday demanded a public apology from Health Minister Veena George and the leadership of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], alleging that false information was spread in connection with the recent black flag protest held by the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), and it lead to violence against Congress offices in Kannur and other parts of the State. Addressing mediapersons at the Kannur DCC office, Mr. Joseph said the protest organised by the KSU intended to highlight what he described as the deterioration of the Health department. He alleged that a false case had been registered claiming there was an attempt to murder the Minister, resulting in the arrest and remand of KSU activists. “The truth has come out. There is not a single video that shows five KSU activists attacking or injuring the Minister,” he said. According to him, none of the available visuals showed the protesters physically touching or assaulting the Minister or using any weapon. The Minister was under police protection and none …

P.V. Anvar’s stand on Aryadan Shoukath unacceptable, says KPCC chief Sunny Joseph

P.V. Anvar’s stand on Aryadan Shoukath unacceptable, says KPCC chief Sunny Joseph

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph has said that All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Kerala State convener P.V. Anvar’s decision to reject Aryadan Shoukath as the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate in the Nilambur byelection was “unacceptable.” Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Mr. Joseph asked Mr. Anvar to align with the UDF policies. He said the selection of Mr. Shoukath as the candidate in Nilambur was the unanimous decision of the Congress. “We could not convene a formal meeting of the State Congress election committee. So the Congress leadership held a discussion and reached a consensus on the candidate, which was subsequently announced by the Congress’s national leadership,” he said. Mr. Joseph asked how a person who wanted to become part of the UDF could make “careless statements” like Mr. Anvar did. “Mr. Anvar should give a clear answer to this.” He said Mr. Anvar had raised objections against the LDF government’s policies when he left the LDF and resigned as MLA. “Who can challenge those policies in the people’s court and …

Today in Politics: Kerala Congress plot thickens; president K Sudhakaran says ‘will step down’ if AICC asks | Political Pulse News

On Wednesday, KPCC president K Sudhakaran said he would abide by any decision taken by the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Crucially, he made it clear that no one from the AICC has asked him to step down, but said he would obey any change arising out of a reorganisation. Story continues below this ad “If they (AICC) ask me to step down, I will obey their command as a loyal and obedient party worker,” he said. “I have no complaints and am satisfied with my work. The party has given me most of the important positions,” he said. Media reports have suggested that the AICC is planning to reorganise the state unit ahead of the local body elections this year and the Assembly elections due in 2026. Amid tussle, Congress tells Karnataka leaders: Don’t make public comments | India News

A dinner at a minister’s residence involving Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah that set off a buzz about change of guard to remarks of various Congress leaders that have sparked controversy, Congress legislators and ministers were asked during a meeting on Monday to refrain from airing their views in public and address schism in the party forum. The development comes in the backdrop of a meeting on January 2, where Siddaramaiah was present with Dalit and SC, ST and OBC Cabinet colleagues seen to be loyal to him at the residence of Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi, that stirred the pot. What fueled theories that the meeting was part of efforts to counter the dominance of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, also the chief challenger to the CM’s post, was its timing. The KPCC chief was in Turkey on a family holiday during the gathering at Jarkiholi’s house. On Monday, during the Congress Legislature Party meeting in Bengaluru, AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala is learnt to have advised party leaders to abstain …

A worrying prospect for the Congress in Kerala

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Sudhakaran. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu As the BJP has made intense efforts to gain a foothold in Kerala’s bipolar political landscape, the Opposition Congress has faced a daunting task this time. The Lok Sabha election results will probably help the party leadership better understand and navigate the challenge. A week ago, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K. Sudhakaran, who had temporarily handed over charge to senior leader M.M. Hassan following his candidature from the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency, assumed his role once again after fighting aggressively for it. Mr. Sudhakaran probably sensed that the Congress central leadership may replace him if the party does not perform well. But even if the party does well, his reinstatement is not guaranteed, considering the reshuffles within the party after every other election. HC verdict absolving Sudhakaran of conspiracy comes at a politically opportune moment for the KPCC president

The Kerala High Court order absolving Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K. Sudhakaran of conspiracy charges in the politically sensational case relating to the attempt to murder Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener E.P. Jayarajan on board a train in Andhra Pradesh in 1995 has arguably come at a politically opportune moment for the beleaguered Congress veteran from Kannur.  For one, the case obligated senior leaders to rally around Mr. Sudhakaran despite discord about his functioning style and party reorganisation.  Victim of conspiracy Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the verdict vindicated Congress’s stance that Mr. Sudhakaran was the victim of a Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] political conspiracy.  Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said the CPI(M) had relentlessly used the case to target Mr. Sudhakaran for 29 years. More leaders were expected to follow suit.  The verdict could not have come at a better time for Mr. Sudhkaran. His purging of “discontents” reinstated by M.M. Hassan and his flashy entry into the KPCC headquarters at Indira Bhavan had goaded his rivals in the …
