Supreme Court To Hear Mosque Committee’s Petition In Mathura Land Dispute Case On September 17

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition by the Shahi Idgah Masjid challenging last month’s Allahabad High Court verdict, which allowed 15 suits filed by Hindu petitioners claiming the mosque, in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, is built on 13.37 acres of land that was Lord Krishna’s birthplace. The petitioners had sought removal of the mosque. The top court will hear the Muslim side’s petition on Tuesday. On August 1 Justice Mayank Kumar, in what was seen as a landmark ruling with implications for other similar pending suits, allowed all 15 suits by the Hindu petitioners to stand. The mosque, built in the 17th century during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, was believed to have been built at Krishna Janmasthan, the site where Lord Krishna was born. The land of the Shahi Idgah Masjid has been part of several litigations filed before the Mathura court and waiting to be heard in the Allahabad High Court. Earlier this month, the Allahabad High Court allowed an application for the inspection of the Shahi Idgah mosque complex. The case stems from a suit in the court of Civil Judge Senior Division (III) by Bal Krishna through Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta and others for shifting of the Shahi …

The court said the modalities of the survey will be discussed at the next hearing on December 18. The order on the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah issue is the second temple-mosque dispute in which the High Court has given its nod to a survey over the past months. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) recently completed a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque next to Varanasi’s Kashi Vishwanath temple, but has sought more time from a local court to submit its report. According to advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, the application submitted to the High Court said a lotus-shaped pillar characteristic of Hindu temples exists on the mosque premises, and …

Mathura Court Orders Survey Of Shahi Idgah Mosque From January 2

Mathura: A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura today ordered the survey of the Shahi Idgah Mosque, said to be built on the “Krishna Janmabhoomi” or the birthplace of Lord Krishna, by the Archaeological Survey of India from January 2. The report will be submitted after January 20. The court passed the order on a lawsuit filed by Vishnu Gupta of the Hindu Sena, which said the survey will be similar to the one in Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque where a “Shivling” was said to be found during a survey. The lawsuit is one of the many by Hindu outfits demanding the removal of the 17th century Shahi Idgah Masjid from the Katra Keshav Dev temple, claiming the mosque has been built on the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The Shahi Idgah mosque, the petitions say, was built at the Krishna Janmabhoomi on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1669-70 in the 13.37-acre premises of Katra Keshav Dev temple. The civil court in Mathura had earlier dismissed the case saying it cannot be admitted under the Places of Worship Act of …
