Supreme Court clears KSRTC driver over alighting passenger’s death, says he moved bus on conductor’s signal | Legal News

4 min readBengaluruJun 2, 2026 01:23 PM IST The Supreme Court has acquitted a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver convicted for causing the death of a passenger after he moved the bus while she was still alighting. A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and N V Anjaria on May 27 allowed an appeal filed by Mohammed Hanif Jainum Khalifa and said, “When appellant accused had followed instructions of conductor in stopping and moving the bus, which the appellant was duty-bound to do, it would be both unreasonable and illogical to attribute any negligence on his part.” The bench also highlighted that the conductor signals the driver when it is appropriate to start and restart the bus after a stop. The driver, who would otherwise concentrate on driving, would depend on the conductor’s indications, signals, or whistling to regulate the vehicle’s movement. The award recognises KSRTC’s extensive and structured training initiatives implemented across its five training centres. “These programmes cover fuel efficiency, refresher courses, accident-free driving, road safety awareness, and simulator-based training. Under the Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM-AJAY) scheme, heavy-vehicle driving training and free driving licences are provided to Scheduled Caste candidates in collaboration with the Transport Department. Similar initiatives are being implemented for minority communities in partnership with the Directorate of Minorities,” an official said. KSRTC to operate 140 special buses for Vairamudi Utsava

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Mandya division, has made special transport arrangements for the convenience of devotees attending the Vairamudi Utsava scheduled to be held on Saturday, March 28. A total of 140 additional buses will be operated from major bus stands across Mandya district, including Mandya, Nagamangala, K.R. Pet, Srirangapatna, and Pandavapura, to facilitate smooth travel for pilgrims visiting Melkote for the annual festival. Additional services will also be operated from Mysuru, Hassan, Tumakuru, and Bengaluru, according to a press release. The KSRTC Mandya Divisional Controller said the arrangements have been made in anticipation of a large turnout of devotees for the annual utsava. Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar laid the foundation stone for the KSRTC-SIMCO project on Friday (February 20, 2026), describing it as a milestone in Kerala’s vehicle recycling sector. The Edappal RVSF will cater to the districts of Palakkad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki. Similar centres are planned for northern and southern Kerala in collaboration with Steel Industries Kerala Ltd (SILK). Mr. Ganesh Kumar said the project would help curb illegal and environmentally harmful vehicle scrapping practices in the State. PSI killed as KSRTC bus crashes into motorcycles in Kaggalipura

A police sub inspector was killed and three others were injured when a KSRTC bus crashed into their motorcycles at Kaggalipura in Ramanagara on Monday. The bus was heading from Kanakapura towards Bengaluru. The driver lost control and crashed into the median. The vehicle jumped to the other side of the road and crashed into two motorcycles coming from the opposite direction and then fell into a roadside drain, said the police. The deceased was identified as Nagaraj. The police said that he served in the Electronics City traffic police station and was returning home with his daughter Kavya. Kavya and two others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to different hospitals in Bengaluru, where they are being treated in the ICU. A few passengers travelling in the bus also sustained minor injuries . The Kaggalipura police have registered a case of death owing to negligence and rash and negligent driving against the driver for further investigation. 15 injured as KSRTC bus overturns in Kerala’s Kozhikode

As many as 15 passengers sustained injuries when a Super Fast KSRTC bus from Idukki to Koombara overturned at Manassery near Mukkom in Kozhikode district, Kerala, on Sunday night. The accident took place around 11.30 p.m. Police sources said the bus overturned when the driver attempted to overtake a car. There was suspected speed limit violation in the accident prone area, they said. No passengers sustained grave injuries. Most of them were admitted to a private medical college hospital at Mukkom. One of the three new KSRTC superfast premium bus services will be from Palakkad to Thiruvananthapuram, he said.
