Not the first data breach at Kudankulam: Recalling 2019 cyberattack that targeted thorium info | Explained News

5 min readNew DelhiUpdated: Jul 18, 2026 07:48 PM IST A data breach has exposed information linked to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNP), India’s flagship nuclear project located in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district. For nearly a month, numerous documents purportedly linked to the plant — including engineering drawings, inspection records, minutes of meetings, technical reports and official correspondence — have been circulating on the dark web after it was leaked by ransomware group World Leaks. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), which operates the plant, has downplayed the leak, maintaining that documents relate only to non-critical facilities outside the ‘reactor island’ and pose no risk to nuclear safety. Reactor island refers to the central, highly protected section of a nuclear power plant where all nuclear processes and critical safety operations take place. Yet, the breach has renewed cybersecurity concerns over India’s critical and strategic infrastructure, particularly at a time when the government has begun opening up the tightly regulated civil nuclear sector to private participation. The incident has also drawn particular attention …

Rosatom sends initial fuel load for Kudankulam’s third reactor as Putin arrives in Delhi

New Delhi: Russia’s state-run nuclear corporation announced on Thursday that it has delivered the first consignment of nuclear fuel for the initial loading of the third reactor at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu, with the development coinciding with President Vladimir Putin’s arrival in New Delhi for an annual bilateral summit. the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu A cargo flight operated by the Nuclear Fuel Division of Rosatom delivered fuel assemblies manufactured by the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant, the corporation said in a statement. A total of seven flights from Russia are planned to supply the entire reactor core and some reserve fuel. These shipments are provided under a contract signed in 2024, which includes fuel supply for the third and fourth VVER-1000 reactors of the Kudankulam plant for the entire service life, starting from initial loading. Critical component fabricated for Kudankulam reactor successfully tested

The separator-reheater, MSR-1000-1, meant for Kudankulam Nuclear Power Projects Unit 5, at a production facility. The critical component has been tested successfully. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement ZIO-Podolsk JSC, an arm of the machine-building division of Rosatom State Corporation – JSC Atomenergomash, which is supplying critical components to the now operational 2 x 1,000 MWe VVER reactors and also four more similar reactors under construction, has fabricated and successfully tested a set of main equipment – the first set of separator-reheater – for Unit 5 of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP).  The separator-reheater, MSR-1000-1, has been designed to remove moisture and superheat steam that has worked out in the high-pressure cylinder and enters the low-pressure cylinder of the turbine. MSR-1000-1 is a cylindrical apparatus consisting of a separator and a single-stage reheater, which, when mounted at the nuclear power plant, are located vertically one after the other. The weight of the separator is 47 tons with the length of almost 7 meter and the diameter of 4 m.  The reheater is a heat exchanger with …
