Woman injured in gunfire in Manipur’s Ukhrul; villagers rescued: Police| India News

A 19-year-old woman was injured by gunfire between two armed groups in Ukhrul, Manipur on Monday while she was working in a paddy field, police said, adding that the gunfight erupted around 1pm and lasted till around 6.50pm. Security outside the residence of Henlianthang Thanglet, the chairman of the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), in Churachandpur on Monday. (ANI) Police said the incident took place in Mongkot Chepu village between two armed groups suspected to be Kuki-Zo village volunteers and Tangkhul Naga village volunteers. A police officer at Litan told HT, “The gunfight reportedly occurred between village volunteers of the two communities. We also heard automatic assault rifles, but we cannot confirm who was using them. We sent the rescue team (BSF personnel) stationed at Litan police station. We have got no reports of casualties aside from the 19-year-old woman.” Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul (a Kuki civil body) in a statement on Monday condemned the incident and called for the immediate rescue of villagers. Vungzagin Valte, a prominent Kuki-Zo legislator and former Manipur minister, passed away at a private hospital in Gurugram on Friday following a nearly three-year battle with injuries sustained during the 2023 ethnic violence. He was 63. (X/AShardaDevi) Valte, a BJP MLA from Thanlon assembly seat in Pherzawl district, was brutally assaulted by a mob in Imphal on May 4, 2023, when he was returning from a meeting with then-chief minister N. Biren Singh, just as the state spiralled into ethnic conflict. The three-time MLA had been in and out of critical care since the assault. Initially sent to Delhi after the 2023 attack, he underwent extensive treatment for over a year before returning to Manipur in April last year. However, his health took a turn for the worse and was recently airlifted to Delhi for admission to a prominent Gurugram hospital. Guwahati: Days after President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur, protests could be seen at different parts of Valley areas. While the Kuki-dominated hill districts welcomed the Central government’s decision, the civil society organisations based in Meitei-dominated valley districts have been demanding the revocation of the decision.
