Officials said the trio — 18-year-olds Genlenmang Vaiphei and Paogoulal Chongloi, and 20-year-old Lunliandaw Vaiphei — were shifted from RIMS under tight security around 12.15 a.m. to the Churachandpur Medical College, about 60 km south of Imphal. The Meiteis are in the majority in Imphal and the valley beyond, while the Kuki-Zos dominate Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts. 2 min readNew DelhiMay 15, 2026 01:58 AM IST The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a fresh gazette notification giving another extension until November 20, 2026, to a Commission of Inquiry for submitting its report on the probe into the 2023 Manipur violence that claimed over 250 lives. In February, three months before the Commission was due to submit its report, Justice Ajay Lamba, former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and head of the Commission, resigned and the Centre had announced the appointment of former Supreme Court judge Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan as the new chairman. Other members of the Commission are retired IAS officer Himanshu Sekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar. According to the MHA notification issued on Thursday, the Commission will now submit its report to the Central government as soon as possible but “not later than November 20, 2026”. 3 min readNew DelhiFeb 27, 2026 02:15 AM IST The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the CBI and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the ethnic violence that rocked Manipur in 2023 to share the copies of the chargesheets filed in the cases with the victims and kin. A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi issued the direction after perusing the status report filed by former Maharashtra DGP Dattatray Padsalgikar, who is monitoring the investigations. The SC had appointed Padsalgikar on August 11, 2023, to supervise the probe by the CBI and state police in Manipur, and asked him to also “investigate the allegations that certain police officers colluded with perpetrators of violence (including sexual violence) during the conflict”. Hearing the Manipur violence-related matters on February 13, the SC had sought a fresh report on the status of the investigation. Imphal/Guwahati/New Delhi: The Manipur BJP has denied allegations by a Congress spokesperson and lawyer from the Meitei community of spreading rumours that he helped the Kuki tribes in pursuing a case, being heard in the Supreme Court, against former chief minister N Biren Singh. The Congress spokesperson, N Bupenda Meitei, in a statement said he “asked the BJP and its cohorts to stop spreading such rumour and fake news against me and my party, the Congress.” A Manipur BJP spokesperson on Friday told reporters in the state capital Imphal the party is not aware of the matter that Mr Meitei referred to, and they have nothing to do with it. Fresh violence erupts in Manipur after militants attack village in Jiribam – India TV

During the wee hours of the day, the militants attacked a village in Jiribam district, an official said. The militants used sophisticated weapons and opened fire, targeting the village in the vicinity of the Borobekra police station around 5 am, he said. Furthermore, he added that they also charged bombs. The official said that the CRPF and police personnel retaliated to the attack and a heavy exchange of fire started. He also stated that the additional security forces were being rushed to the spot as reinforcement. So far no casualties have been reported in the gunfight.  The violence broke out while the elderly people, women and children were being moved to safer places by security forces. The area, Borobekra, is located around 30 km from Jiribam town.
