Nine cheetahs from the Southern African country of Botswana were released on Saturday into Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur, taking their number there to 45 apart from three in the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in the central Indian state’s Chenpuriya. India launched the cheetah reintroduction project in September 2022. The animals will be released into quarantine enclosures at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where officials will closely monitor their health and behaviour before gradually preparing them for life in the wild. The batch, comprising six females and two males, will be airlifted from Botswana to Gwalior on an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, and then transported to Kuno by helicopter. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav are scheduled to oversee the release of the animals into specially prepared enclosures at the park. A batch of eight cheetahs is scheduled to be translocated from Botswana to Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP) on February 28, officials said on Monday. The move will take India’s total cheetah population to 46 as eight cubs were born at the KNP this month.  Botswana is the third African nation to send cheetahs to India as part of the Union Government’s Project Cheetah. Two batches of cheetahs have arrived from Namibia and South Africa since the project to reintroduce the species in India was kickstarted in September, 2022. A release from the Madhya Pradesh government said this information was given by officials of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), who took part in a review meeting of the cheetah project in Bhopal on Friday (April 18, 2025) in the presence of Union Minister for Environment, Forests & Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. “Efforts are underway to bring more cheetahs from South Africa, Botswana, and Kenya to India. Eight cheetahs will be brought to India in two phases. There is a plan to bring four cheetahs from Botswana to India by May. After this, four more cheetahs will be brought.
