Assault on human dignity, says Rahul Gandhi on incident of bonded labour in U.P.

Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi . File. | Photo Credit: PTI Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (June 24, 2026) reacted sharply over the alleged incident of forced bonded labour in Muzaffarnagar describing the incident as an assault on human dignity adding as jobs disappear due to the collapsed economy most vulnerable sections are falling prey to such exploitation.  “The case of bonded labour of workers in Muzaffarnagar is very shocking. In addition to being forced to work without pay, workers were bitten by dogs, speared, whipped, and fed cattle feed. This is an assault on human dignity – the victims deserve justice and rehabilitation, and the perpetrators deserve the harshest punishment,” wrote Mr. Gandhi, on X.  He added, “It is also important for us to ask what compulsions force workers into such dangerous situations. As jobs disappear, incomes stagnate, and protections for the most vulnerable, such as MGNREGA and labor laws, are weakened, desperation grows. Those with no other options or protections become easy prey for such exploitation. This isn’t a typical criminal incident …

Massive fire erupts at labour settlement near Udyog Bhawan, no casualties

A major fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday at a labour settlement near Udyog Bhawan in central Delhi, where workers associated with the Central Vista redevelopment project were residing. The blaze rapidly spread through the settlement, triggering a large-scale firefighting operation by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS).  According to preliminary reports, the fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. Why did the SC quantify labour of homemakers? | Explained

Why did the SC quantify labour of homemakers? | Explained

The Supreme Court on June 11 held that the unpaid domestic labour performed by homemakers must be assigned an independent economic value while determining compensation in motor accident death cases.  | Photo Credit: The Hindu The story so far: The Supreme Court on June 11 held that the unpaid domestic labour performed by homemakers must be assigned an independent economic value while determining compensation in motor accident death cases. It fixed a minimum notional income of ₹30,000 per month for this purpose. Observing that homemakers are “nation builders”, a Bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and N. Kotiswar Singh created a distinct head of compensation called “loss of domestic care” in motor accident claims and mandated a 10% increase in this amount every three years. What was the dispute? The ruling came in an appeal arising from a motor accident claim in Punjab. Following the death of a woman named Reshma in a road accident in November 2001, her husband and three children approached the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) seeking compensation. In December 2003, the …

CITU urges Haryana to extend deadline, publish Labour Code Rules in Hindi

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has demanded that the Haryana government extend the deadline for suggestions on draft Labour Code rules and publish them in Hindi, calling the current process a violation of workers’ rights. CITU state general secretary Jai Bhagwan and vice president Satveer Singh submitted a memorandum to Deputy Labour Commissioner Paramjit Dhull in Chandigarh in the absence of the State Labour Commissioner. The Union said the Haryana administration released draft rules for the Code on Wages on May 4, Industrial Relations Code on May 5, and Social Security Code on May 7, with a one-month window for amendments. CITU objected that the rules were issued only in English, unlike the Central Government’s versions which are in both Hindi and English. “Publishing rules only in English disregards regulations and makes it impossible for workers, union activists and stakeholders to read or suggest changes. This amounts to a disregard for the fundamental rights of workers,” the leaders said. They also argued that no consultations were held with trade unions or employer representatives …

Marulasiddaradhya has appealed to all stakeholders to join hands to eradicate the practice from its root. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a World Day Against Child Labour function in Yadgir on Friday. He stressed that legal action should be initiated against those who are responsible for child labour. Necessary awareness should be created among parents who are forced to allow their children to take up labour, he said. “Law not only prevents child labour but also hands out punishment accordingly if a citizen is found using children aged below 14 years as labour,” the judge said. He said that child labour keeps the nation undeveloped and said no child should be deprived of getting an education. If a child is forced to work, he will miss an opportunity to become well-educated and serve the nation, he added. Additional Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Kolar said that …

Jhansi first UP district with ‘no child labour in its 496 villages’ | Lucknow News

In line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s announcement to make Uttar Pradesh child labour-free by 2027, Jhansi is set to become the first district of the state where all 496 of its gram panchayats would be declared child labour-free. Meanwhile, the district is also gearing up to eradicate child labour from its urban areas. Divisional Commissioner of Jhansi, Bimal Kumar Dubey is scheduled to present the district’s child labour-free model before CM Adityanath and Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar at a state-level consultation in Lucknow on ‘World Day Against Child Labour’ on June 12. Dubey said the milestone is the result of a year-long campaign that combined administrative mobilisation, community participation, village-level monitoring and support from trade bodies, NGOs and welfare departments. What it means Officials clarified that ‘child labour-free’ status does not imply that every household in the district was physically inspected. Rather, it means that all identified child labourers were withdrawn from work, enrolled in schools, and their families linked with welfare schemes. A working child under the age of 14 years is considered …

RSS’s labour union highlights social security coverage, AI concerns at ILO conference

Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), labour wing of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) urged countries to ensure that artificial intelligence complements workers rather than replaces them, while highlighting India’s social security coverage and protections for gig workers at the International Labour Conference. Speaking at the 114th international labour conference in Geneva on Tuesday (June 9), BMS delegate Bojji Surendran claimed India had received international recognition for achieving 64% social security coverage for its workforce, describing it as the highest in the world. He said the award was conferred by the International Social Security Association at the World Social Security Summit in Kuala Lumpur. “At a time when global unemployment is projected to remain stable at 4.9%, the persistence of global job gaps affecting more than 400 million people serves as a stark reminder that employment alone is not enough,” the transcript of his speech shared by the organisation stated. He urged that governments and international institutions must focus on decent work that provides fair wages, social protection, occupational safety, and opportunities for skills development. He also expressed concern over …

US adds 172,000 jobs in May, easing fears of labour market slowdown

3 min readUpdated: Jun 5, 2026 11:13 PM IST The US economy added more jobs than expected in May, suggesting the labour market remains resilient despite uncertainty caused by rising geopolitical tensions and higher oil prices. According to the US Labour Department, employers added 172,000 jobs in May after adding 179,000 in April, far above economists’ expectations of around 85,000 new jobs. How many jobs does the US actually need? Eonomists believe that the US economy needs to add between zero and 50,000 jobs every month to keep up with the expanding workforce. The fact that May’s numbers came in at over three times that baseline is being seen as a positive sign. However, the baseline number itself has dropped. One of the reasons behind this drop was the US government’s crackdown on immigration, which reduced the number of people entering the workforce. This has also made the unemployment rate considerably stable, with it being at 4.3% for three months in a row. Companies holding onto people – and not hiring aggressively While the number …

US proposes action against India, 59 others over forced labour import curbs

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has proposed trade action against 60 economies, including India, after determining that they have failed to impose and effectively enforce prohibitions on the import of goods produced with forced labour. India is among 54 economies that, according to the USTR, have failed to impose and effectively enforce a prohibition on imports made with forced labour. (Reuters) In a statement issued on Tuesday, the USTR said it had concluded under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974 that the acts, policies and practices of the 60 economies are “unreasonable and burden or restrict US commerce”, making them actionable under American trade law. India is among 54 economies that, according to the USTR, have failed to impose and effectively enforce a prohibition on imports made with forced labour. The list also includes countries such as Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. “The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced …
