BBAU professor slams VC selection process for lacking ‘complete transparency’

The professor and head of the journalism and mass communication department at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, on Saturday took to his Facebook handle to slam the vice chancellor selection process at the varsity. The professor, Govind Pandey, through his Facebook post asserted that it lacks complete transparency. (Screenshot of Facebbok post) The professor, Govind Pandey, through his Facebook post asserted that it lacks complete transparency. Colleagues of Prof Pandey stated that his posts should be treated as a “whistleblower” expose, questioning the entire selection process. They noted that this lack of transparency often results in non-deserving persons being appointed to coveted posts based on the whims and mercy of a select few (a three-member selection committee). Pandey’s Facebook post further highlighted the hypocrisy of the system: “Vice-Chancellors who insist on conducting tests and interviews even for appointing a peon leave their own selection to the discretion of a mere three-member committee.” He added that for the appointment of assistant professors, while API (Academic Performance Indicator) scores are displayed on the website, “the vice-chancellor …

‘There’s a little bit of clarity lacking’: Dinesh Karthik on exclusion of Shubman Gill, Jitesh Sharma from India T20 World Cup squad | Cricket News

The huge news coming out of India’s T20 World Cup squad announcement on Saturday was the exclusion of Shubman Gill. Gill, who was appointed both the Test and ODI captain, had returned to the India T20I setup ahead of the Asia Cup in September as the vice-captain but couldn’t fire with the bat. As a result, Axar Patel who Gill had replaced as the vice-captain, was appointed captain Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for the T20 World Cup. Another omission from the squad was Jitesh Sharma who missed out due to India selecting Ishan Kishan as the second wicket-keeper batter and Rinku Singh also made his way into the squad which ruled out Jitesh who had looked solid in the recent South Africa series. Former India player Dinesh Karthik reacted to India’s World cup squad announcement, saying that there was a little lack of clarity. He, however, lauded the selected squad as one of the strongest heading into the tournament. “The big news of the day: India World Cup T20 squad is announced and guess what? Shubman …

Budget 2025: Clean Energy Gets Big Boost, But Key Environmental Action Lacking, Say Experts

Last Updated:February 01, 2025, 22:37 IST The Rs 20,000-crore Nuclear Energy Mission to deploy small modular reactors by 2033 is significant, but experts caution about funding, safety, and the risks compared to other renewable sources While presenting the Union Budget 2025, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a Rs 20,000-crore Nuclear Energy Mission. (Image for representation: AFP) The Union Budget 2025 reaffirmed India’s commitment to clean energy, prioritising domestic manufacturing of renewable components, and launching a Rs 20,000-crore Nuclear Energy Mission. It, however, missed a crucial opportunity to address pressing environmental issues like escalating air and water pollution, said policy experts. The focus on promoting domestic manufacturing in key sectors like solar PV cells, EV batteries, wind turbines, and grid-scale energy storage was widely welcomed. Additionally, removal of basic customs duty on cobalt powder, lithium-ion battery scrap, lead, zinc, and 12 additional critical minerals is also expected to reduce input costs and scale up recycling capacities. “At present, for many clean energy equipment manufacturers, it is increasingly becoming difficult to compete with Chinese giants on …

Mohammed Shami’s Legs Bandaged, Smoothness Lacking: Pacer To Miss 2nd T20I vs England Too?

Mohammed Shami‘s much-awaited return to top-flight cricket did not receive too many supporting signals during the seasoned pacer’s nearly hour-long stint of varying intensity at the India nets in Chennai on Friday. Shami, whose last appearance in India colours was during the 2023 World Cup final, worked hard on finding his bowling rhythm at the Chepauk, but never really hit his flowing peak which makes him a tough customer for batters. Shami was expected to feature in the playing 11 during India’s first T20I against England at Kolkata on Wednesday, but the management decided to delay his comeback. Much like he did at the Eden Gardens, Shami was an active presence in the nets here too, starting with a light jogging session alongside assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. Then the 34-year-old engaged in throwing drills for a few minutes with fielding coach T Dilip before hitting the bowling nets closer to the Madras Cricket Club stand. Shami, whose both legs were heavily bandaged, began with half run-up and worked up reasonable pace as well. …
