3 min readPuneJul 27, 2026 01:09 PM IST Months after the Maharashtra Government disqualified 92 lakh women from its flagship Ladki Bahin Yojana, Women and Child Welfare Minister Aditi Tatkare said Sunday beneficiaries should refrain from spending the monthly assistance given to them on shopping. The scheme provides Rs 1,500 every month to women aged 21 to 65 years from families with an annual income below Rs 2.5 lakh. Government employees, income tax payers and beneficiaries of certain other welfare schemes are excluded. “The beneficiaries should not spend all the Rs 1,500 they receive entirely on shopping, but rather save a portion of that money,” Tatkare said at an event in Washim district. “We are telling all the beneficiary women not to spend all Rs 1,500 on shopping. Save a few hundred rupees in self-help groups (SHGs), banks, or cooperative societies, and use them wisely. The action follows the detection of large-scale irregularities in the scheme, including instances of government employees and even men receiving the monthly assistance despite being explicitly barred from the eligibility criteria. “After the government initiated action, some beneficiaries voluntarily returned the money, while a few came forward and had their names removed from the scheme. In cases where beneficiaries did not return the funds despite being identified, recovery proceedings have been initiated,” a senior official said, adding that the actions like stalling salary, promotions and appraisals have also been initiated against some of the staffers. The official added that recoveries in several cases have been made through salary deductions, with action being taken department-wise. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said his government will consider the demand to rename the Ladki Bahin scheme after Deputy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash in Baramati.  Earlier on Tuesday, NCP MLC Amol Mitkari demanded that the government`s flagship Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana for financial assistance to women be renamed after Pawar. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday said that the state was planning to raise monthly aid under the Ladki Bahin scheme from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100, reported the PTI. He said that despite observations by the CAG on the Ladki Bahin scheme, the government will continue providing monthly financial aid to women, ahead of the Zilla Parishad Elections 2026. According to the PTI, while speaking at a rally while campaigning for Zilla Parishad Elections 2026 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, he also announced that the monthly assistance would be raised from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100 at an appropriate time. “An amount of Rs 45,000 crore is disbursed through the Ladki Bahin scheme. Around 86 lakh beneficiaries were rejected in 17 months after the scheme was rolled out.  The scheme began in July 2024, with 2.43 crore beneficiaries receiving ₹1500 per month for five months till November 2024.
