Ancient Geological Hotspot Linked to Great Lakes’ Depth and Formation

Ancient Geological Hotspot Linked to Great Lakes’ Depth and Formation

Evidence has emerged pointing to a significant role played by an ancient geographic hotspot in shaping the Great Lakes. Researchers have linked the formation of these massive water bodies to a hotspot that interacted with the Earth’s lithosphere millions of years ago. While the lakes are commonly attributed to glacial activity during the Ice Age, recent findings suggest that deeper geological processes may have contributed to their formation, providing insight into their extraordinary depth and size. Study Highlights Geological Interactions According to research published in Geophysical Research Letters, a team of scientists from the University of Houston and the University of Arizona investigated the Cape Verde hotspot’s historical activity. Hotspots, known for generating heat and material flow from the Earth’s mantle, are believed to have influenced the Great Lakes region approximately 225 to 300 million years ago. As Pangea, the ancient supercontinent, moved over this hotspot, thinning of the lithosphere occurred, making the ground beneath more susceptible to external forces. Seismic Clues Support Hotspot Theory As reported by phys.org, data from seismic wave analyses supported …

The complex process of restoring lakes

The Doddanekundi lake in Bengaluru. | Photo Credit: By Special Arrangement A recent report by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) stated that not one lake of the 110 lakes it studied in Bengaluru meets potable water quality standards. Potable water is water that is safe for human consumption — i.e., water that can be used for drinking or cooking. Safe water means it contains no toxins, carcinogens, pathogenic microorganisms, or other health hazards. Achieving potable water quality in lakes means that the water must meet the highest quality standards. Rainwater, often considered the purest form of water, becomes contaminated once it contacts the atmosphere. As it moves across natural and man-made surfaces, especially in urban areas, it picks up minerals, chemicals, and pollutants. Even if wastewater is prevented from entering water bodies and only runoff is allowed, the lakes will still not meet potable water quality standards. Additionally, the stagnant nature of lake water leads to biochemical processes that further degrade its quality. Lakes in Bengaluru receive water from three main sources: treated/partially treated …

Police said the deceased were identified as M. Jothika (8) and her brother M. Jothi (7), and S. Hrithikroshan (4). The siblings were the children of agricultural labourer S. Murugan (37) and his wife M. Devi (32), residents of Kothakottai village near Vaniyambadi town in Tirupattur. Jothika and her brother had gone to a nearby lake to give a bath to their pet dog, when they slipped and fell into the waterbody. As the children were missing for a long time, Murugan and his wife went in search of them and found the pet dog near the lake. Along with other residents, they alerted the Vaniyambadi Taluk police and firefighters, who recovered the bodies from the lake. The bodies were sent to the …

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Restores Three Lakes In Water-Stressed City

Picture posted by RCB on social media© X (formerly Twitter) Professional franchise cricket team Royal Challengers Bengaluru has restored three lakes in Bengaluru, a city grappling with a severe water crisis. RCB launched the Lake Improvement Works Project in October 2023 as part of the “RCB Go Green Initiative”. The project focused on desilting and developing the Ittgalpura and Sadenahalli lakes, located in highly water-stressed areas. These areas lack access to Kaveri River water and rely entirely on groundwater and surface water with borewell depths ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 feet. According to a statement, more than 1,20,000 tons of silt and sand have been removed from the two lakes and nine acres of lake land have been recovered, leading to the creation of stabilisation ponds and wetlands that benefit the local bird and animal populations. The water holding capacity of the lakes has also increased to cover up to 17 acres, it said, adding that the lakes will not only facilitate groundwater recharge but also support agricultural activities in the surrounding areas. They will …

Federated Data Lakes Could Make Sense of Enterprise Data ‘Mess’ to Power AI

Australian organisations have tried hard to bring data together in recent decades. They have moved from data marts, which contained information specific to business units, to data warehouses, data lakes and now lakehouses, which contain structured and unstructured data. However, the concept of the federated lakehouse could now be winning the day. Taking off in the U.S., Vinay Samuel, CEO of data analytics virtualisation firm Zetaris, tells TechRepublic reality is forcing organisations to build roads to data where it resides rather than attempt to centralise it. Zetaris founders realised data could never be fully centralised TR: What made you decide to start Zetaris back in 2013? Vinay Samuel, CEO of Zetaris Samuel: Zetaris came out of a long journey I had been on in data warehousing — what they used to call the big database world. This is back in the 1990s, when Australian banks, telcos, retailers and governments would collect data mostly for decision support and reporting to do (business intelligence) kind of things. Rejuvenation of twin lakes near Katpadi will be completed in six months: Duraimurugan

Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan inspecting the ongoing work in the twin lakes near Katpadi town in Vellore on Sunday. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Man-made islands for local migratory birds, boating and tiled walking track for visitors in the twin lakes – Kazhinjur and Dharapadavedu — near Katpadi town in Vellore will be ready in six month as more than 55% of the total work has been completed. Accompanied by Deputy Mayor M. Sunil Kumar, Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan on Sunday inspected the work, which was started in December 2022 by the Water Resources Department (WRD) that maintains the twin irrigation tanks. With the withdrawal of northeast monsoon in the coming days, the work might be fast tracked due to decline in groundwater level around the lakes. It would help ongoing desilting and deepening of the waterbodies much faster. “The lakes help to recharge the groundwater covering at least 8-10 villages in its surroundings. Most of these areas are farming villages,” R. Ramkumar, Assistant Engineer (AE), PWD (Katpadi), told The Hindu. Spread over 100 acres, the …

How NASA’s newest satellite will monitor lakes and rivers from space

Early tomorrow morning, a new Earth monitoring instrument called the Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission, or SWOT, will launch into space on a SpaceX rocket. The satellite will take the first global survey of Earth’s freshwater systems from space, observing not only the oceans but also lakes, rivers, and coastal regions. It will be able to measure the height of water in these systems for the first time. “It will help us understand where water is, where it’s coming from, and where it’s going,” Katherine Calvin, chief scientist and senior climate advisor at NASA, explained in a press conference.  Understanding Earth’s water and how it moves is crucial for both modeling climate change over the long term and dealing with urgent events like floods and droughts. As these events are driven by global ocean currents and weather events, a global view is required to be able to understand them. Even the satellite itself is international. NASA collaborated with France’s space agency (CNES) on SWOT, and Canada and the UK also worked on the satellite.  “It …
