Southwest monsoon reaches Kerala, marks official beginning of rainy season

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, marking the official beginning of India`s four-month rainy season, reported the PTI. The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, a few days later than its usual onset date of 1 June. Earlier forecasts had suggested the monsoon would arrive as early as May 26, but its progress was delayed. According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has now advanced across the entire Lakshadweep region, Kerala and Mahe, as well as parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The weather system has also expanded over large sections of the Arabian Sea, the Comorin area and several parts of the Bay of Bengal, indicating a steady progression across the country. In a major move to boost tourism, the Union Territory administration has relaxed several long-standing entry permit rules for domestic travellers, simplifying a process many tourists previously found cumbersome. Under the revised guidelines issued by the administration, tourists will no longer require a local sponsor to obtain an entry permit. Besides, applicants are no longer required to secure police clearance certificates from their hometowns or local police authorities before applying. Instead, background verification and security checks will now be conducted directly by the Lakshadweep Police after the application is submitted. The changes are intended to make travel planning smoother while still maintaining security protocols for the ecologically sensitive island territory. What were the earlier permit rules? The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Lakshadweep Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) Limited to ensure all tourism related activities shall be undertaken within the overall carrying capacity of the islands and with adequate environmental safeguards. Around 84.6% of coral reefs in Lakshadweep experienced bleaching during 2023-24, the Ministry of Earth Sciences informed (MoES) Lok Sabha on Wednesday. 84.6% reefs were affected. 95% of households have phone in India, only 9.9% own computer | Business News

Over 95 per cent of households possess a telephone or mobile phone in India, while just 9.9 per cent of households possess a computer including desktop, personal computer and laptops, the Comprehensive Annual Modular Survey 2022-23 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Wednesday showed. The concentration of ownership of computers is with urban households with a 21.6 per cent share, while rural households have a 4.2 per cent share. Delhi leads among states/UTs with 27.8 per cent of households owning a computer, followed by Sikkim (26.4 per cent), Mizoram (24.2 per cent), Kerala (22 per cent) and Nagaland (20.2 per cent). 100 per cent of households in Chandigarh posess a mobile phone or telephone, followed by Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Ladakh with over 99 per cent of households having a telephone or mobile phone. Cadets from the National Cadet Corp’s (NCC) Kerala and Lakshadweep Directorate was adjudged the best directorate at the Inter Directorate Services Shooting Competition (IDSSC) held as a part of the Thal Sena Camp (TSC) in New Delhi. The team of 34 cadets from the directorate outperformed 578 cadets at the event organised under the aegis of the Director General, NCC, from September 2 to 13. The Kerala and Lakshadweep Directorate had fielded 91 cadets in different competitions based on the professional skills needed for soldiers. Hundreds of students from Lakshadweep islands across Kerala and some from outside the State are reportedly stuck in Kochi after uncertainty over getting tickets to travel home for the Onam vacation. “The situation is quite bad. The hostels are closed. Many students cannot go back to their hostels and are in the grip of uncertainty with a small number of tickets being allotted to students for sea crossing to the islands,” said Mohammed Faizal, former MP, here on Sunday. However, sources in the administration said it was seized of the matter and had acted positively to address the situation. Two extra schedules with a total capacity of 650 seats are being operated, and tickets have been issued for the sail. The extra schedules are to Amini and Kadamath islands and Androth, Kalpeni, and Kavaratti.
