Sjoerd Marijne’s India Blueprint: Inside the training, tactics and mindset shift driving women’s hockey team | Hockey News

The stories travelled ahead of him. Long before Sjoerd Marijne gathered the current core of the Indian women’s hockey team, the younger players had already heard whispers. About the grind, the discipline, and most famously, the eight-hour training sessions in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics. So when Marijne now casually asks, “Do you have heavy legs?”, the response is almost rehearsed. “No, no, no, coach.” The sessions may not (yet) be as brutal, but the message has landed. Loud and clear. The old-timers in the team — the Lalremsiamis, Navneet Kaurs and Sushila Chanus — experienced this after they qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in late 2019. When the players reassembled for the national camp in Bengaluru, Marijne — unhappy with the lethargy shown in the qualifying match — scheduled a one-off eight-hour training session. It started at 8 in the morning and ended at 4 pm, with a short lunch break being the only downtime. For Marijne, the significance of that marathon session was never about punishment. It was about imprinting a mindset …

If we play well, we could represent India| By Lalremsiami

Hockey isn’t that popular in Mizoram. When compared to football, no one really knows about the sport. So naturally when I started playing hockey in school, my family didn’t know about the sport. A teacher in school handed me a hockey stick and drafted me into the team. As I started playing, I started falling in love with the sport. I was soon drafted into the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre at the Thenzawl Hockey Academy, which was a major stepping stone. At the academy, our seniors, coaches, and teachers all used to parrot the same thing, “If we play hockey well, we could represent our country; represent India.” That was a big motivating factor for a young Lalremsiami. I wanted to represent my country. International debut and early days At 16, I was drafted into the National Hockey Academy in Delhi and then life changed. I made my senior international debut in 2017 against Belarus and have been a part of the Indian women’s national team since. In the early days, I …

Shrachi Bengal Tigers Edge SG Pipers in Shootout to Seal Women’s HIL Final Spot

Shrachi Bengal Tigers Edge SG Pipers in Shootout to Seal Women’s HIL Final Spot

Shrachi Bengal Tigers booked their place in the Women’s Hockey India League 2025–26 final after edging past SG Pipers 0-0 (7-6) in a tense sudden-death shootout in Ranchi on Monday. The result earned the Tigers a crucial bonus point and set up a repeat clash against the Pipers in the summit showdown. In a striking repeat of their earlier league meeting, the contest once again ended goalless in regulation time before being decided in sudden death. While the outcome was decisive for the Tigers, the match carried little consequence for SG Pipers, who had already secured qualification for the final thanks to their commanding position at the top of the standings. Both teams began with intent in an evenly matched first quarter, trading early attacks. Shrachi Bengal Tigers earned an early penalty corner but failed to convert, while the Pipers responded with sustained possession and circle entries without finding a breakthrough. Goalkeepers dominate as shootout decides outcome The second and third quarters saw the Tigers apply consistent pressure, only to be denied repeatedly by SG …

Hockey: In Kukuda’s Sunelita Toppo and Sonepat’s Sakshi Rana, two teenage hopes for India’s future | Hockey News

Hockey: In Kukuda’s Sunelita Toppo and Sonepat’s Sakshi Rana, two teenage hopes for India’s future | Hockey News

Sunelita Toppo is on the move, and four Germans are running to stop her. A pass is played in her direction from the right flank and even before it reaches her, the puny attacker is surrounded by the quartet in pink, each one at least a head taller than her. On the run, Sunelita opens up her body to receive the ball. In a single motion, she cuts left to eliminate one opponent, then shuffles to the right and changes direction to wrong-foot two more. It opens up enough space to thread a forward pass. Just like that, another raid on Germany’s defence was launched. For those fleeting few seconds, it was easy to forget that Sunelita was all of 17. By the time she’ll legally be an adult, Sunelita could well be a ‘veteran’ on the hockey field. Within a year of her debut at the age of 16, she has made more than two dozen international appearances. Asian Champions Trophy hockey: Navneet, Lalremsiami on target as India overcome Japan goalkeeper’s heroics to reach final | Hockey News

Asian Champions Trophy hockey: Navneet, Lalremsiami on target as India overcome Japan goalkeeper’s heroics to reach final | Hockey News

When asked on the day before the semifinals why India have been better in the second halves of matches at the Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, head coach Harendra Singh was guarded in his response. “Sometimes Plan B becomes Plan A, and it’s been working for us. The opponents also have been doing their homework,” he said. He then elaborated, with a chuckle: “Har match mein hum opponents ke goalkeeper ko hero bana rahe hain.” Harendra was being tongue-in-cheek as he thought India’s finishing could be better than shooting at the goalkeepers hurriedly. But sure enough, a day later, Japan’s goalkeeper Yu Kudo emerged as the (nearly) hero in the semifinal in Rajgir. Navneet Kaur (48′) and Lalremsiami (56′) were on target as India set up a title showdown against China on Wednesday. Kudo was playing like a character in a Japanese anime, who seemed to possess the superpower to read where Indian forwards were targeting. She saved with her pads closed, she saved with her stick stretched upwards, and she saved with her outstretched …

(PTI Photo/Swapan Mahapatra) A pall of gloom hung over the Jaipal Singh Stadium. The captain, Savita Punia, was inconsolable. The coach, Janneke Schopman, frowned. The crowd stunned into silence. Shattered that the first chance to qualify for the Paris Olympics had slipped away after coming within touching distance. “We played so hard… But it was not our day,” Savita said, her voice quivering. It was a sort of heavy-on-the-heart affair that’s become synonymous with the Indian men’s team. The women, too, are following suit. (Read more from Mihir Vasavda) Source link
